Bush's Disconnect on Illegal Immigration

At the start of his campaign for president in 1979, then Candidate Reagan proposed a new law that would create a totally open boarder with both MEXICO and CANADA. He called it the North American Accord plan. Reagan proposed that citizens of all three nations could cross the borders at will for any normal purpose including business purposes and taking jobs.

Under the 1979 Reagan plan any Mexican citizen could cross the United States border with only a birth certificate. They could work and stay in the USA for as long as they wished. Under the Reagan accord the Mexican border was to be free and open. There could be no illegal Mexican immigration. The fact that the person wanting to immigrate was Mexican made the immigration legal.

Of course Reagan never got what he wanted in that regard. The 1986 bill that Reagan signed and approved gave illegal Mexican immigrants amnesty. Amnesty was as close as Reagan go his immigration desires. The north american free trade agreement was just a portion of the propsed North American Accord.

Reagan made the case many times that a totally open border with Mexico would bring prosperity to both nations.

Compared to Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush is hard liner on immigration.

Don't confuse them now. President Reagan went on to continue his belief that borders should be open... note the following:

Some may call is mysticism if they will, but I cannot help but feel that there was some divine plan that placed this continent here between the two great oceans to be found by people from any corner of the earth -- people who had an extra ounce of desire for freedom and some extra courage to rise up and lead their families, their relatives, their friends, their nations and come here to eventually make this country.

While your facts are interesting, and possibly even true, the point is that neither party is doing anything about this, and Clinton's signing of these laws was a part of a long term plan, which happened to give cover to the President because he can point to CLinton as the falt. However, he has done nothing to correct these problems.

Bush is one reason the No Mexican Left Behind bill was not laughed out of the Senate. Instead it passed.

It passed because 39 out of 44 Dems voted FOR it, while Senate Reps voted 32-23 AGAINST it.

Meanwhile, President Bush, in chorus with Ted Kennedy and La Raza, started promising amnesty, rewards, benefits, jobs, privileges, and even citizenship to anyone who could swim, walk, run, hike, sneak, or otherwise illegally cross the border. He not only failed to properly enforce the laws he is supposed to enforce, but he made the problem worse.

This isn't about Reagan. Reagan is dead. This is about Bush`s desire to see liberal immigration policy become the law of the land. Bush favors a liberal guest worker program and a path to citizenship for illegals. Bush favors AMNESTY! Period. In 1986 there were 2.6 million illegals in the mix. Today, there are some 15-30 million illegals looking for amnesty.

Statements made by Ronald Reagan almost 25-30 years ago aren't relevent to the current problems we have with illegal immigration today. Truth is, Reagan demanded that strong employer sanctions be included in the IRCA of 1986. Only then did Reagan sign it into law. The up to one million dollar employer fines for hiring illegals is still the law of the land. If Ted Kennedy hadn't underfunded those employer sanctions, we wouldn't have had 20 years of liberal immigration policy under Bush41, Clinton and Bush43.

IN addition, Reagan wasn't into making the same mistake twice. If Reagan was around today, he would oppose Bush`s liberal immigration policy. And don't say that Reagan wouldn't have changed his mind on the immigration issue. After all, Reagan became a strong pro-lifer after he saw the effects of the first few years of Roe vs Wade, not to mention some serious "soul searching" on the right to life issue.

Your spinning about Reagan and 25 year old issues does not water down the treasonous behavior of Bush, RINOS and the Democrats to sell us down the river on illegal immigration. Now we are dealing with 15-20 million not the 1-2 million of that era.

But its interesting how now even "Bubba" Bill Clinton is praising the president on his illegal immigration scheme. So to me that puts Clinton, Bushbots like "peach" (and the other liberal republicans in this conservative forum) and El-Presidente Jorge Bushe' as thinking alike.

I won't be the first, but I'll say it anyway.

Ronald Reagan, like President Bush, was right on many thing and wrong on others. Ronald Reagan was flat out wrong about amnesty, softened borders, and union with Mexico and Canada. President Bush is right about the war on terror, among other things, but flat out wrong about amnesty, open borders, and union with Mexico and Canada.

The 1986 amnesty was a disaster and it lead to the terrible immigration problem we have today in that we have something like 20 million invaders in our country that our leaders say that we can't do anything about except to reward them and call them Americans. We need to learn from our mistakes. We don't want to repeat that same mistake or worsen it.

W has an emotional attachment to the illegal nanny/housekeeper who helped raise him. It's totally understandable. For the rest of us, who didn't employ an illegal to help raise our children, we are not emotionally invested in excusing law breakers who have no business being in this country. Instead of us caving to his viewpoint, I wish he would get busy and uphold the law, as he swore to do.

Maybe President Reagan and others are wrong but then maybe they see a much larger picture of the world, its people and relationships between countries as the world in effect becomes smaller because of communication/transportation/shared knowledge, etc.
