Coronation Parade Detours Through Street Brawl (NM - Richardson)

This is strictly a hunch, but I'm guessing Gov. Bill Richardson wasn't in the best mood last week after realizing that his seemingly smooth path to re-election could turn into a pretty rocky road.

I refer, of course, to the news that bomb-throwing former Republican Party boss John Dendahl would replace mild-mannered physician J.R. Damron in the race against Richardson.

New Mexico political reporters relish this story, and for good reason. We thrive on colorful quotes and conflict, and Dendahl will inject plenty of both into this previously listless race.

No one is saying with any real conviction that Dendahl and the Republicans can actually take the fourth floor of the Roundhouse back from Richardson in November...

Richardson, who seems to be methodically preparing for a 2008 presidential run, must dread the prospect of an opponent who will take delight in attacking his soft spots.

Dendahl told me last week that he and Richardson have known each other for almost 30 years, and they've never much liked each other. "It could be characterized as largely hostile," Dendahl said of the relationship.

Dendahl told me last week that he plans to target Richardson on taxes and education, among other things, but he will do so with more restraint than he showed as party chairman in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The governor's heavy-handed dominance of the Santa Fe political scene since 2002 has enraged many long-suffering Republican legislators, so they must relish the idea of someone like Dendahl taking him down a notch. I wouldn't be surprised if Richardson dangles some peace offerings at key Republican lawmakers to try to take some of the heat off of him this fall.

So, the governor's race just got a lot more interesting if not necessarily less predictable.

Article is a couple of weeks old, but worth reading. Richardson is not wasting any time in attacking Dendahl. Has a couple of radio ads accusing John of forcing the former republican candidate out of the race and a lot of old history of John when he was party chairman. The race won't be boring.
