There is a variant that will shoot .223.

What does everyone see in a .223? Am I missing something? I once fired a friends AR-15 and all I got out of it was a lot of noise and a small hole.

Maybe I'm just spoiled to heavier firepower like a .44, .357, .45 LC, or a .30-06, or something like that.

Principal attraction to .223 is availability of volumes of good, cheap ammo. I shoot and reload all the calibers you referenced...except 30-06. My big bore revolvers include .357 Mag, 41 Mag, 44 Mag, 460 S&W Mag, 500 S&W Mag, 45-70. I found the 15" T/C Encore 460 S&W barrel really put some zip on my standard .454 Casull round compared to the same loading in the Ruger 454 Casull Super Redhawk (7.5"). I'm currently planning a T/C Encore with the 20" 500 S&W barrel, Boyd's Nutmeg Thumb-hole stock and Boyd's beavertail forend. Again, more barrel than the Performance Center Hunter Magnum 500 S&W. I have to find out if T/C drilled and tapped the Pro fluted stainless barrel for open sights.

I enjoy the flat shooting performance of 17M2, Ruger 204 and .223 for punching paper targets. Low recoil and easy to put 10 rounds in a single fat hole. I do have a 15" .308 barrel for the Encore. That gets fired with Speer 100 gr "Plinker" bullets and a minimum load of powder. Fun without too much punishment.

I really like the way a n AR-15 handles. I can get rounds on target faster than an AK47, M1 carbine or an M-1 Garand. Now, if I'm not in a hurry, the Remington 700 in 30-06 is just fine.

For home protection, a Mossburg pump or a M-1911 will do the trick.
