Pa. races could set table for 2008 By Salena Zito TRIBUNE-REVIEW Sunday, July 9, 2006

Welcome to Pennsylvania, known as "The Cradle of America" because the Founders drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia.

Fast-forward 230 years and it is about to become another national cradle - a political one -- for the 2006 midterm elections.

Wasn't that special election in CA supposed to be the race that set the pace for 2006? Oh yeah, the Democrat lost so now we need another race to set the pace. And when the Dem loses that one, they will find yet another race to set the pace.

What the left actually means:

"Hey, we might actually win this race!"

Don't count on the Dems winning this one, unless of course, fast eddy and slime kkklinton have a hand in it....

I'm not familiar with all the candidates the article mentions but the Tribune is wrong about the 10th district race (Sherwood). It wasn't a razor thin margin for Sherwood over Scott, he won by about 7000 votes out of about 53,000 cast. I wouldn't call that razor thin.

Because Republicans still out number Dems in the 10th, the general election probably won't be as close.

Parts of the district are starting to increase Dem registration (particularly Monroe County) because of all the Jersey people moving in.

Sherwood won by 12 or 13 points, but that won't stop the press from calling it a ''razor thin margin.''

If President Bush would
Slam the door on illegal immigrants immediately,

Make it clear that he has abandoned all plans to provide Social Security and Medicaid benefits to foreign nationals (which is the height of absurdity) and

Instigate measures immediately to nullify de facto or de jure the Supreme Court's eminent domain decision

He would secure the 2006 and 2008 elections for the Republicans.

There is still time but none to waste. The Republican base could still return with wild enthusiasm and bring with it the swing voters.

Are you paying attention, White House Eavesdroppers???

i wrote that and for Sherwood that primary was suprizing and razor thin, she had zero money, zero name id
he should have done better
he will win as he did in the primary
but carney has an infusion of cash so he better stay home and play well with the natives

scandal never does a body good
ok well maybe a body
but not polls
of course unless you are bill clinton

What is this unexplained Republican fatigue? It iss hard to imagine Weldon could lose. He has been high profile patriot imho.

Now here's a nuanced approach. "Slam the door on illegal immigrants immediately," Maybe you should read the testimony of PA businesses and farmers at the hearings Spectre had, and also, maybe you should know that there is no door to slam. So simplistic demands are just ludicrous.

unfortunately Weldon is losing because that area has been tracking for the D's for over 15 years, and none of the LOCAL GOP bosses have done a thing to stop it.
None of those guys should lose, yet there they are in trouble.
and Rendell will be a big help for the D's in that area

But signs of life have begun to spring within his[Lynn Swann] campaign and he is starting to find his political legs.

I'm not seeing this. Whoever is running Swann's campaign doesn't seem to be getting his/her candidate out in front of issues very well, save property tax reform. Swann won the (R) nomination and should have ridden the grounswell of support he had at the time, instead he went on vacation and lost the slim lead he had.

Meanwhile Rendell started running just after the primaries in May and has stuck his name on every commercial for every state program and policy. For lots of PA residents who are grafted to the state for their daily rations, all they have to hear is "Ed Rendell is responsible for your check" and, since they pay no property or business related taxes, they swoon and pull the (D) lever with glee.

fast eddy is the hero today for passing that funeral proposal. I am not sure if it will make a difference in his numbers, but I think some people will show appreciation by voting for him in November. I shudder to think that Governor Rendell could win.

I'm with you. Couldn't stand Fast Eddie when he was Mayor here; can't bear the thought of another 4 years.

F'cryin' out loud, you sound like my wife. She just gave me a lecture on how opinionated and dogmatic I am. When I think of polygamy all I can think of is more women telling me what's wrong with me.

This problem for the GOP candidates did not happen overnight; it has been 15 years in the making. The local GOP bosses can no longer deliver statewide candidates and they show signs of down-ballot fatigue.

We were just discussing one of these GOP "bosses" on another thread.

No mention of DIANA IREY vs murtha

What's your take on Repub state chairman Gleason, is he working hard to get these and other Repubs elected or just giving tepid support to some?
