HUH???? The USA was backing the Somali warlords? This is news to me.

Agreed, they got off easy. Perhaps it was because they were teenagers, although if my fuzzy recollection serves, wasn't 50 lashes regarded as a death sentence for a man in the Old British Navy?

It depends on the definition of lashes. Could be a stinging pain, could be a bleeding wound. Of course, we put pot smokers in prison for years.

For the life of me I can't understand how people can still be living in the 12th century. Or more questioning....how can the people they "rule" allow it to happen?

Very true. I remember a few years ago there was a HUGE collective hissy-fit throughout the MSM about this runt-twit who perpetrated some fairly minor crime in Singapore and was sentenced to just a few "lashes".....he was on Oprah and everything....all of the liberals were moaning and crying over this horribly unjust and barbaric sentence being handed down to this "sweet young boy". It turns out that in Singapore, "lashes" are administered by hitting the criminal with a small, short bamboo stick....only a few minor welts were left on the child and it turned out to be much ado about nothing.
Truly a far cry from a punishment in the old British sailing Navy, where lashes were administered via a true bullwhip and a single lash would lay your back open down to the muscle.
I guess the same way you would if you had to go up against a large organized armed force.
You wouldnt know who you could trust as most all of your neighbors could be too scared or (in trying to find favor) may turn you in. It would be very difficult to organize a reactionary force to combat the better equiped and organized opressive forces.
You would nave to go it pretty much alone against them. Just like trying to fight our army and police forces. Wo do you think would win?
