Believes 'Cars' Gives Kids The Wrong Message About Racing Trains
(CBS) -- Is Disney's hit movie "Cars" spinning its wheels when it comes to safety?
CBS 2 West Suburban Bureau Chief Mike Puccinelli reports on the fight to put the brakes on a scene in the blockbuster animated picture about a fast talking rookie racer named Lightning McQueen.
"As I'm sitting there, I couldn't believe it because this is a red car. My daughter was killed in a red car," said Lanny Wilson with the DuPage Railroad Safety Council.
His 14-year-old daughter, Lauren, was killed in a collision 12 years ago when her brother chose to race a train and lost. It was a split-second decision that forever changed his family.
"I don't want this kind of nightmare, this kind of tragedy to happen to other families, especially if we can do something to prevent it," Wilson said.
He believes editing out the train race scene from the DVD version of the film will prevent from other young people from making fatal, split-second decisions.
The president of the Illinois State Medical Society agrees and wants the scene cut from future versions of the film.
"You give children that kind of a message: It cool, it is good to try to go and beat a train. It is the wrong message," Dr. Peter Eupierre said.
In a statement, Disney officials say: "Lightning McQueen's poor judgment in outrunning the train reveals his reckless and thoughtless behavior and is certainly not glorified."
Officials won't say if they're considering editing out the controversial scene.
Until they do, Wilson vows to continue to fight in Lauren's name.
"You never get over it. You just cope and try to go on," he said.
Obviously you are a prime example of being too stupid to be allowed to live by your self or allowed to vote. You should never be allowed access to a computer terminal because you are a mindless fool. Your group home supervisor needs to be reprimanded for negligence because he left you on your own.
Please have the good sense and taste to mourn in private and not show your disfunction by becoming a screeching idiot and trying to down every one elses good time.
By the way the word is LOSE not LOOSE. OOOS not OOOZE.
Hey, give the simperer KIRKWOOD some repect. He probably stopped posting on a I Love Rudy or a McCain for president thread to post his limp thoughts here.
14 year old kids die how many times a year in this country while running? She wants the school to waste resources because her kid died. Tell her to take a hike.
So when kids play "cops and robbers" or "cowboys and indians," they're actually shooting each other instead of just pretending to? And in the example I said (one kid is the car and the other is the train--they're emulating what they saw in the movie), that kid isn't a kid, he's really a train? These kids have powerful imaginations.
When something is presented as "cool" the idea takes root. Witness the thug/rap culture. Kids ARE what they see and hear whether you like it or not.
I don't like it, but I still don't believe it. It all depends on their upbringing. I don't think thug/rap is SOLELY responsible for the violent crime, though I think it is partially responsible. I also think upbringing is heavily involved. And I just have a hard time picturing a kid seeing the train scene in a movie and then ten years later he decides he's going to try it because he saw it in an animated movie. I present myself as an example. I saw cartoons like that all the time as a kid, yet I have not been tempted once to try it. And I just turned 22, so I wasn't a kid that long ago.
You were attributing something to the article that wasn't there.
It was in case someone brought up that point later, I would disspell it before they could mention it.
That wasn't the point. The color of the car was added irony.
Oh, no! Not IRONY!!!!!! God help us all.
I didn't say anything about a train in connection with red cars.
You're talking about unsafe driving, and that includes train racing. Let's arrest all people who drive red cars! And make red cars illegal.
Argue with the statistics if you like.
I'm feelin' lucky.
Have the good taste to mourn in private and leave every one else alone.
All this waste of human flesh is doing is using his dead kid so that he can get his Andy Warholl prescribed 15 minutes of fame. He's despicable and needs his ass kicked.
Just be aware that the police watch red cars more than any other color because of the statistics. I'm a Grandma and got rid of a red car after Mark told me why I was a cop magnet. I got tired of being tailed. My current car is silver and I no longer get shadowed.
Your point seems to be that people are so stupid they can't think for themselves, and that they need some sort of nanny force (people like you who are smarter than everyone else) to protect them from themselves.
People believe accidents happen to idiots, not them, "I can drive and talk".This spans the behaviour spectrum. "Drugs won't hurt ME, cigarettes won't hurt ME, speeding won't hurt ME". Then they find that they aren't "bullet proof".
It's not taking it out of context. You're saying people do stupid things because they think it's cool to do stupid things because they see it in movies when they're kids. But this metaphor doesn't work. People talking on cell phones while driving isn't the same as people racing trains. People talk on cell phones while driving because it seems to be the most convenient thing to do. I don't know if a significant number of people actually race trains, but if anyone does, it's for the thrill. If this idea happens at all, and they REALLY do it because they "think it's cool," it probably would be because they saw it recently in a "Need for Speed" movie or something, NOT because they saw it in an animated movie when they were kids.
Heck, I don't even remember anything from the animated movies I saw as a kid. I couldn't for the life of me tell you what happens in all those Disney features I watched over and over again.
would you allow pedophiles to receive Namblas newsletter while in jail. Or a rapist to receive "Playboy"? If not, why?
If they're already in prison, why should I care? The only problem I'd have with it is that if they receive those things they're not being significantly punished for their crimes.
Petra did a song years ago called "Computer Brains". Bet you can't guess what the premise is. A line in the song says, "Garbage in, garbage out".
You mean some dumb ol' rock band from the 80's said it!!!??? It must be the GOSPEL TRUTH!!!
Well, I drive a red car and I've never been shadowed.
Why are you so angry?
My 280Z did.
Yea and he/she is gay too.
Let me say this a different way.
Real cars are not sentient.
Someone really did pee in my Corn Flakes this morning.
Dang! I flipped cat food in my tea. And it's not even a Monday! ;)
"Lights are on!"
"14 year old kids die how many times a year in this country while running? She wants the school to waste resources because her kid died. Tell her to take a hike."
Yep, I know this stuff never happens, even though my daughter died at age 18 from cardiac arrest after running track and XC for 7 years and earning 12 high school letters. No signs of trouble before it happened. In fact, if you'd bother to do a search, you'd find this isn't unusual. And even if the AEDs don't help a young athlete, they'd very likely help an older fan in the gym.
Sorry for exploiting my grief here, though. Quite thoughtless of me.
"Have the good taste to mourn in private and leave every one else alone."
Gosh, what a great idea. Never ever should anybody try to raise money to help others or get any good for others from the death of a loved one. What a terrible, awful thing to do.
"He's despicable and needs his ass kicked."
What a wonderful human being you are. Would you please kick the ass of this guy whose daughter is dead?
How many of your children are dead? I hope none.
