Two Members of Tonga Royal Family Killed in California Wreck
Thursday , July 06, 2006
SAN FRANCISCO Two members of Tonga's royal family were killed when a teenager racing her car crashed into their sport utility vehicle, authorities said Thursday.
The San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault would not release the names of the crash victims, but he said a 56-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman killed in the crash Wednesday night were members of the Tongan royal family.
"Out of respect for the Tongan culture and Tongan government, we are not going to release the names until the Tongan government has done the proper protocols of notification," Foucrault said.
The driver of the red Ford Explorer carrying the two also was killed, the California Highway Patrol said.
Edith Delgado, 18, of Redwood City, allegedly was racing her car at speeds up to 100 mph on a highway in Menlo Park, about 25 miles south of San Francisco, when she tried to pass the SUV the royal couple was traveling in, said highway patrol Officer Ricky Franklin.
Delgado's car slammed into the driver's side of the Explorer, causing it to swerve across several lanes before tumbling to a stop on its roof, Franklin said.
Delgado, who was not injured, was jailed on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and engaging in a speed contest, Franklin said.

Daddy, like, come get me out of jail. I wrecked the Escalade. This is a bummer.

Tongan royals killed in Highway 101 accident

The royal couple apparently died after their 1998 red Ford Explorer was sideswiped by a speeding white Mustang on Highway 101 just north of Willow Road around 9 p.m. Wednesday night.
Edith Delgado, 18, of Redwood City, was allegedly racing her 1998 Mustang against a black Cadillac Escalade at speeds up to 100 mph when the CHP says she hit the Ford Explorer in which the royal couple were riding.
The collision sent the Explorer over several lanes, CHP spokesman Ricky Franklin said, as the driver tried to regain control.
The SUV flipped multiple times before coming to rest on its roof on the highway shoulder.
All three people in the SUV were wearing their seat belts.
We may have to offer them protection now. N.Korea is fueling missiles to head in their direction as we post this. And the country is basically without leadership now.
The King is still alive, it is the Prince that was killed.
From the article:
Now the last monarchy in the Pacific, Tonga has been a Polynesian kingdom and a protectorate of Britain, from which it acquired independence in 1970. It is ruled by 87-year-old King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV.
"His Royal Highness Prince Tuipelehake was dubbed the "prince of the people" by ordinary Tongans. He was a leading pro-democracy advocate within the royal family"
Well, my handle is No Truce With Kings, but I am not really after pro-democracy kings. Just kings that call themselves presidents-for-life or supreme soviet dear leaders, and behave like Louis XIV (L'etat? C'moi!)

Three people died, including two members of the Tongan royal family, died in the crash.
I understand that.
How would you feel if missiles were heading your way and your family was killed in another country?
According to the article you posted the Dimgado vehicle was a Cadillac Escalade and not necessarily an SUV. However, the vehicle the royal family was in was actually an SUV that flipped several times. So. I'm thinking it actually WAS the SUV's fault since it flipped but Dimgado was just racing.
Stupid article/editor/writer/whatever!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is a little confusing, but a girl driving a Mustang was racing with an Escalade, when she tried to pass the Tongans' Explorer SUV.
Here in Columbus the most frightening ones are the married 30-35 year old Moms with two kids. Totally clueless.

Driver (Edith Delgado) was quoted earlier this year as advising friend shot in bar to apply himself (I assume it is same person since age, name, and home city the same). Guess she could have taken the same advice to heart. Only college she will be getting is correspondence through the penitentiary - at least for awhile.

"I loved him so much,'' said the victim's father. One friend, Edith Delgado, 17, said she urged him to apply himself so he could go to college.
"You're too smart for the streets,'' she said she told him. "That's why I'm here, I'm street smart,'' he replied
I have a LOT of Tongan friends, this is pretty big stuff. The king is a good guy and while the family pretty much runs the show over there this ain't cool.
Street racing scum. Hope the sky falls on them.
The former monarch, Queen Salote was very well liked, the story of her was, she was at Queen Elizabeth's coronation, in the parade in the rainstorm, and she was the only head of state that stayed outside during the entire rain, out of respect for Queen Elizabeth.
Tongans are great people, when they are your friend, they are for life, but I pity the person that has a Tongan as an enemy, they can be fierce!
Very sad
actually it was east palo alto, the former murder capital of the world.
