Poll shows re-election chances strong for Schwarzenegger

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, winning back voters with a series of moves including helping gain agreement on a $131 billion budget with increased money for education, is in strong position to win re-election in November, a poll released today shows.

Schwarzenegger is favored over his Democratic challenger, state Treasurer Phil Angelides, by 44 percent to 37 percent among state voters in the poll by the Survey and Policy Research Institute at San Jose State University. Fourteen percent of those surveyed are undecided.

The governor's job approval rating has jumped to 49 percent among voters surveyed compared with 41 percent who disapprove of his performance -- the best results he has seen since March 2005.

Schwarzenegger, apparently listening to the voters who soundly rejected his partisan agenda in the November 2005 special election, has gained with several key groups of voters, including women and independents.

The governor hurt himself with voters by lambasting teachers, nurses, firefighters and other labor groups as "special interests'' before the November election, but today's survey showed he has improved his job approval rating among voters from union households from 27 percent approval in January to 43 percent now.

"The governor has improved his standing among the moderates and independents who provide the swing votes in California elections," said Melinda Jackson, assistant professor of political science at San Jose State and academic director of the survey. "The Democrats and liberals still don't like him, but he has firmed up and expanded his base. If he maintains this course, he doesn't leave Angelides much room to grow."

In addition to the budget deal with more money for education, the Republican governor has praised the Democratic-led Legislature for helping him put a bipartisan $37 billion public works bond package on the fall ballot to pay for new and renovated...

Cripes. Last time they said it was a dead heat and he got more votes than the 200 other candidates combined. If he's "up 7" in the latest poll, he'll probably win by 800.

I really hope that Angelides tax and spend moniker weakens the entire Dem ticket and the GOP has a resurgence in CA

increased money for education

Money down a rat hole, as far as I'm concerned. Ann Coulter calls public schools "the Left's madrassahs."

California is basically ungovernable. Might as well vote in the most entertaining candidate.

Wait until more California short-attention-span-voters get a good look at the Terminator vs. Mr. Peepers race. Arnold may win by 1,000%!

The chron reference to the first poll (49 - 41) may not be accurate as reflected in the following thread posted by FO.

Incumbent Arnold Schwarzenegger is tied in California’s gubernatorial race, according to the latest poll by Zogby Interactive. 45 per cent of respondents in the Golden State would vote for Schwarzenegger, while 45 per cent would support Democrat Phil Angelides. Poll: June 13-17, interactive, 1370 Likely Voters, 2.7% margin of error

Expect to see polls all over the place.. Lots will likely occur between now and the only real poll that matters.

I don't think the chron is referring to the Zogby poll. The SJSU poll had three questions:
1) California Right Track/Wrong Track
2) Approve/Disapprove of Govenor's Performance
3) Schwarzenegger or Angelides.

The results for question #2 were 48-41.

You're right , my error. Thanks. The one above referencing the 49 41 was an approval ratins poll and not a head to head.

From the article

"The candidates have strong support among their parties' voters with Schwarzenegger backed by Republicans at 74 percent to 10 percent while Angelides is favored by Democrats at 62 percent to 19 percent."

I am a bit surprised that the liberal skunk only has 62% support from his party.

The governor hurt himself with voters by lambasting teachers, nurses, firefighters and other labor groups as "special interests'' before the November election,

That's such horsesh-t and this liberal rag knows it. Arnold never called teach, nurses, etc. a "special interest." He was referring to their corrupt and shameless unions they're forced to be a part of. This is pure parroting of Democratic propaganda to claim Arnold was lumping in the rank and file with the corrupt leaders who hiked their dues to pay for their narrow political agenda, and still haven't lowered them.

44 percent to 37 percent is very poor for an incumbent, though he has a much better chance of getting re-elected because he is a governor, and thus can rebound easier. I'm a strong supporter of Arnold and hope he gets re-elected. As he takes the mask off Angiledes' face (uncovering a tax and spend liberal), his margin will probably grow.

I believe that's because he has pledged to raise taxes. Plus, Arnold is not offensive to moderate voters.

Even my goo-goo relatives are going to vote for Arnold, and none of them have ever voted for a "Republican".
