Dean calls justification used in New York ruling on gay marriage 'bigoted, outdated' Today in New York:
New York's highest court today turned back a broad attempt by gay and lesbian couples across the state to win the right to marry and raise children under New York State's marriage law, saying that denying marriage to same-sex couples does not violate the state constitution. In a 4-2 decision, the Court of Appeals found that the state's definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman, enacted more than a century ago, could have a rational basis, and that it was up to the State Legislature, not the courts, to decide whether it should be changed.
Governor Dean responded to the decision in a written statement, saying:
As Democrats, we believe that every American has a right to equal protection under the law and to live in dignity. And we must respect the right of every family to live in dignity with equal rights, responsibilities and protections under the law. Today's decision by the New York Court of Appeals, which relies on outdated and bigoted notions about families, is deeply disappointing, but it does not end the effort to achieve this goal. As that essential process moves forward, it is up to the State legislature to act to protect the equal rights of every New Yorker and for the debate on how to ensure those rights to proceed without the rancor and divisiveness that too often surrounds this issue.
According to the National Stonewall Democrats, New York Democrats may be on their way towards achieving that goal:
The New York State Democratic Party overwhelmingly passed a resolution in 2003 that calls for marriage recognition for same sex couples in the state. Additionally, the majority of New Yorkers support marriage equality according to a recent poll released in April. Gubernatorial nominee and Attorney General Eliot Spitzer is one of a number of leading Democrats in New York who has pledged to work with the state legislature to pass legislation granting marriage equality to same-sex couples.

Instead of addressing the things Americans really care about, they're trying to change the subject and use wedge issues in hopes of distracting from their failures and dividing Americans to win elections.

In other words, we need to debate the issue, but NO ONE is allowed to take a different side than Dean...
unfortunately, with the way the liberal courts rule, he just might have a clue on that one..
So elect people to the legislature that will change the bigoted and outdated laws. Make it known far and wide that a vote for a Democrat is a vote for the redefinition of marriage.
I guess this is the issue that will allow the Dems to retake the House and Senate. What are we talking about 1% to 1.5% of the population? Granted these freaks make up a large minority of the blue cities, they are kind of hard to find elsewhere. So far the Dem campaign is Bush is bad (BTW he isn't running in 2008 whiz kids) and gay marriage for everyone. They can't miss with this line up. What else are they committed to? It always amazes me what Dems will emotionally commit to: abortion, gay marriage, affirmative action, and health insurance. What a bunch of nuts. Don't they have a private life that they find fulfilling?

"The Democratic Party platform from 2004 says marriage is between a man and a woman," Dean said May 10 during a "700 Club" program hosted by conservative Christian leader Pat Robertson on his Christian Broadcasting Network.
That statement contradicts the Democratic National Committee's official stance, adopted in 2004. The '04 party platform indicates that marriage is an issue that should be left to the states to resolve, taking no position on whether or not states should marry same-sex couples.
"We support full inclusion of gay and lesbian families in the life of our nation and seek equal responsibilities, benefits, and protections for these families," the platform says.
The DNC issued a statement May 11 clarifying Dean's remarks on the "700 Club."
"I misstated the Democratic Party's platform, which does not say that marriage should be limited to a man and a woman, but says the party is committed to full inclusion of gay and lesbian families in the life of our nation and leaves the issue to the states to decide," Dean is quoted as saying in the statement.
"The Democratic Party remains committed to equal protection under the law for all Americans. How we achieve that goal continues to be the subject of a contentious debate, but our party continues to oppose constitutional amendments that seek to short circuit the debate on how to achieve equality for all Americans."
