LEWISTON A 33-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly threw a severed pig's head into a Lewiston mosque while a group of Muslim men were praying.
The frozen pig's head was rolled into the Lewiston Auburn Islamic Center on Lisbon Street about 10:15 p.m. Monday, witnesses told the Sun Journal of Lewiston.
About 40 men were bowed down as part of their prayer ritual when the incident occurred. They got up and ran outside but were unable to locate anyone. None of the men was hit by the animal head.
Brent Matthews of Lewiston went to the police department Tuesday, told a detective he had thrown the head and was charged with desecration of a place of worship, a misdemeanor.
The charge is considered a hate-bias crime, so Matthews' case will be referred to the Attorney General's Office for further investigation, Lt. Don Mailhot said.
Pigs are considered unclean by Muslims, who are barred from eating pork, and the act was viewed as a deliberate insult upon the religion.
Lewiston police bagged the head as evidence and took it to the police station, witnesses said. Police Lt. Mark Watson said the head was then disposed of.
Matthews, who was out on bail, "admitted to doing it," Mailhot said. "He thought it was funny; it was going to be a big joke. The police department doesn't take anything like that lightly."
No... I don't get that impression at all. I've yet to meet a muslim (and there's a proverbial boatload of them around here) who's expressed a desire to see myself or anyone else killed.
Well...I take that back, there is one guy who's become a Browns fan. He really wants to see the Bengals get killed.
Again...I can't make this any plainer than I already have. I am not comparing the validity of religion's. I was raised Catholic, I married a christian, I've hung out with muslims, lost my virginity to a Presbyterian (she was quite a good amabassador for her faith).
I don't care who or what a person worships. You can worship an oil can for all I care. All I ask is that you treat me and my family with courtesy and respect. The muslims I know have done that so I reciprocate. As a result, we all get along nicely. I don't thorw pig parts at them, they don't try to kill me. It works out really well for us...
Why didn't your friend "encourage" him to leave or hurry up? I'll be damned if I'd just keep my mouth shut and wait.
There ARE Islamic governments today. Not just leaders who are Islamic, but ISLAMIC law.
There ARE proponents in the US, England, Europe, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, et al who WANT Islamic law in these nations.
MORE must be done to (A) stop this political movement in the West and (B) to ensure religious freedoms in predominantly muslim countries (that includes the open practice of non-muslim faiths in Saudi Arabia and also the ability of muslims to convert away from the faith without retribution).
When the muslims here denounce these actions and work to CHANGE them, then I will believe they are proactive in making a difference in this world in this area.
Where are the divestment rallies like there were against South Africa? A whole lot of people are silent.
I don't want such a political system to challenge what we have in the West. It is a supremacist ideology.
I don't look at society as it is today. I fear what this society will be in 25 years. It doesn't have to be. But it IS headed that way.
Precisely. He screwed his own defense. I'd argue this on first amendment grounds.
Take the skinheads bowling, take them bowling...
Oh mine as well, but my grandma was a strong and stubborn woman, and clung to her ways. :) Snakes, especially ones large enough to swallow those chickens, trembled at the thought of her and her hoe.
I've not done chickens, (although I did catch/hook them for grandma, but I have done pheasants that were merely wounded. While it doesn't (usually) remove the head, grasping them by the head and sort of snapping, causes their body weight to snap their neck, to the same effect. Then you stick 'em in the game pouch, until you can get somewhere to clean 'em properly. I did learn a real slick way to do that too. Via a surgeon who had operated on my mother in law and was later invited to go to Nebraska (from Texas) to hunt on my in-law's farm. A bit hard to describe, but it involves a couple of quick snips with some scissors, and everything inside comes loose and is easily removed.
oink ping
I've not had the opportunity to even taste pheasant, yet. Being from a blue state, I think I'm very lucky that my father and uncle had a fishing pole in my hands since I was 2 years old. I learned to bring in and to billy bat blues by 11 years old. All my children have been fishing fresh and salt since they were toddlers too.
I will NEVER forget my sons' faces when we brought in a shark. Now that is a memory! He was only 3 feet. But what an impression it made on my children.
How does one determine that they are healthier after eating something they butchered themselves vs something butchered and bought at the store?
For one, the taste.
I will say, I've not be fortunate to have the opportunity to dress my own fowl' but, when I catch and cook my own fish/shellfish, the taste is way different than if I buy fish.
When I go to a farm and buy fresh buffalo meat and cook and compare that to the buffalo meat I buy at the store, again, same type of difference. I don't even know I'm eating the same animal.
Even fresh eggs react differently in the pan vs. store bought.
Something during processing? I don't know.
update: Muslim leader demanding federal charges, in addition to
current state and local charges for the affront:

I wouldn't want to go to jail on this charge.
Too good of a chance that some Islamic in the jail would execute the
Shari'a remedy (as in sawing the guy's head off).
