South African crime expo website launched
Crime Expo South Africa website ^

After months of controversy in the press, and threats from the South African government, the website that aims to show the world the real crime situation in South Africa has finally launched. Already the ANC government has expressed concern that the website will "harm South Africa's good image", and "scare away tourists and investors". The website is still partially under construction, but already contains some chilling stories and statistics. Let's hope it has some influence, and saves some lives.

Excerpt from the website: "CRIME EXPO SA aim to provide foreigners with detailed information and regular updates regarding the issue of safety in South Africa. Each year, about 20000 people get slaughtered in the most gruesome manner by killers who have absolutely no respect for life.

CRIME EXPO SA aim to provide victims of violent crime, as well as friends and families of the slaughtered, with an opportunity to collectively register their anger and provide the world with a preview of violent South Africa.

By exposing the truth about the danger within South African borders, we aim to spark a re-think on the side of our government on the issue of safety and security. It is the duty of any government to protect all and to prioritize the right to live."

I just came back from a 3-week visit to South Africa, visitng for the first time in 6 years. While it remains a beautiful country, you can see chaos creeping in everywhere, despite having the biggest per capita government in the world.

There was a highly publicized shootout between 20 robbers and police in which 4 police officers died, and 8 robbers were killed. The robbers seemed to be military trained and organized, and the standoff and shootout lasted for hours. How can one still buy the line that poverty brought on by apartheid is the only cause of crime in South Africa?

The current standing joke in South Africa is that the Minister of Security told South Africans to stop complaining about the crime or leave the country, but the government cannot issue passports for those who want to leave, they have run out of paper to print passports!

A beautiful country - where no one feels safe. 20,000 murders a year means every one is at risk of being murdered. In America, you can find that level of insecurity in certain inner city neighborhoods and no one who values their own life would be foolish enough to venture into them. South Africans can't take such a sensible precaution because crime is a nationwide problem there - and out of control.

Actually crime affects South Africans of every race, creed, income bracket and place of residence. Its like Bladerunner - you venture out at your own risk. The police is overwhelmed, the court system is broken and criminals have no fear of the law. What you're seeing in South Africa essentially is a civilization in its death throes due to the absence of order.

As the website points out, foreign tourists are advised not to fly into South Africa. The widespread crime just makes having a vacation there a gamble and the very first thing you encounter is the stench of fear that grips the country. Forget about the nature postcard views and the beautiful cities. You won't enjoy them if you end up being robbed or dead. Such are the facts of life in today's South Africa.
