Yes, Old Yeller was shot because he developed rabies. He got the rabies from defending a family member from another rabid animal. It was terribly sad. It even outranked the death of Bambi's mother in saddness.

Oh, no!! That is just AWFUL! I saw it years ago but have no memory of the story at all, except that it was REALLY sad. Yes, so was Bambi. :-(

I can't imagine Disney making a movie like that for kids/families today, and I can't say that I am unhappy about it either. That's a little too much sadness and 'reality' for me, let alone little kids.
