Israeli forces took over a belt of the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday after threatening to expand an offensive to curb rocket fire, Palestinian security sources said.
The area included three former Jewish settlements, demolished when Israel quit the Gaza Strip last year after 38 years of occupation. Militants often use the rubble-covered zone for firing rockets into Israel.
The Israeli army said that troops had begun moving into the northern Gaza Strip, but gave no further details.
Israel vowed on Wednesday to step up its incursion into the northern Gaza Strip after rockets fired from Gaza hit Ashkelon, a major city 12 km (7 miles) inside Israeli territory, the furthest the rockets have flown.
The rocket fire has compounded the crisis over the capture of a soldier in a cross-border raid on June 25 by militants from Gaza, including members of the governing Hamas Islamist movement.
Late on Wednesday, Israeli air strikes killed a Hamas gunman and a policeman in northern Gaza, bringing the death toll to 10 -- nearly all of them militants -- since Israel began its offensive
Go get 'em, IDF
I guess giving up those settlements was a bad idea.
Wow.....that could be anywhere in Palestinian controlled areas. They do such a great job with infrastructure.

Just ten dead militants throughout this days long offensive. And yet the world is screaming about "genocide" and "war crimes" and convening UN councils to stop the atrocities. How many have died meanwhile in African wars, Middle East prisons, Chinese labour camps? Where is the outrage for them? Unbelievable.
I think that's about to change....and I won't lose any sleep over it.
Go get em!!!

That would be a good thing...
If I was the PM I would take 1% of the land for every day the soldier is held. After 100 days no more Gaza.

Wrong, you do not want to have 5,000 Israeli civilians to get in the way of Israeli military operations in Gaza Strip.
Besides there's only 5,000 Jews living with 2 million rabid ragheads.
I think the Israelis have been remarkably restrained so far. I wonder how much more patience they have left...
Only if you base that 1% on the original land mass. You got 100 acres, take away 1%, you now got 99 acres. Take away 1% and you got 98.1 acres. Actually, I think this might be preferable, as if you base it on size of original land mass, they'll howl how you need to give it all back to 'em. Keep reducing the size in consideration, and that might learn 'em. Or maybe not. Who keeps selling thses guys metal tubing and rocket propellant?
