I saw another story about a boy who was 18 and convicted of 3 different types of sex crimes when he got caught having oral sex with his 16 year old girlfriend in the backseat of a car. He has to register for life and the new law would require his family to move. (he lives with his parents now). They have lived in their house for 32 years or something like that. I guess this is what happens when our elected officials try to fix something without thinking about it. I wonder how many of them ever got lucky in the backseat....I guess none of them.

"If you stop on the side of the road and run into the woods to pee, you can be charged, tried, and convicted of indecent exposure...which requires you to register as a sex offender after paying your nominal fine."

Wow! And some posters on this thread like Tulane and Paleo Conservative are calling for life imprisonmant, nay execution, for these people.

The politicians are reacting to public hysteria. They need to get a grip. I'm sure there are many more stories like the one you talked about and we haven't heard them. Yet. If the press gets bored, they'll swing the hysteria in the other direction.

("Run them out") Which I think was the original intent all along.

According to an article on the blog where I first saw this (I posted the original, not the blog entry), you are correct, Sonny M.

Perhaps they could live in prison rather than out among polite society. What a concept!

Registered Sex Offender does not equal Child Molester in Georgia folks. If you stop on the side of the road and run into the woods to pee, you can be charged, tried, and convicted of indecent exposure...which requires you to register as a sex offender after paying your nominal fine. Oral sex is still illegal in Georgia. Getting that special favor from your spouse and forget to close the curtains? Uh, oh! You can be charged, tried, and convicted, etc, etc.

I'm sure glad you made this point. The emotion of this issue makes me wonder if even here the issue has turned people into a hanging mob.
