Murtha Damage Control Time

In something reminiscent of ABSCAM, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) for past few days has been reminding the power brokers in his 12th Congressional District where the money came from... his beneficence. He is making it clear: (1. His power in Washington, D.C. turns up as largesse in the 12th Congressional District  (2. Remember where the money came from  (3. Put money in my coffers because I've got to cover for my mistakes.

What are Murtha's mistakes?

·        Telling untruths about the very military that, like Sen. John Kerry, he has traded off of to get into office in the first place.

·        Telling the untruth that the military is 'worn-out,' 'washed up' and 'demoralized.'

·        Making the statement that Marines are guilty of cold-blooded murder even before they are legally tried and judged.

Murtha's would-be Majority Leader, would-be President of the United States delusional sense of grandeur has caught up with him. His website took down its own online poll... the one that showed an overwhelming disapproval of his call to withdraw US troops from Iraq. [LINK to NewsMax article]

Rep. John Murtha is losing support back home in Pennsylvania. The following PA news articles and reports show the trail of Rep. John Murtha during this 4th of July holiday:

July 3, 2006

WTAE Channel 4, Pittsburgh runs the following story: "Latrobe Brewery Sale Talks Continue; Murtha Now Involved"

[EXCERPT]: Rolling Rock is back in the spotlight, getting attention from Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and U.S. Rep. John Murtha. [LINK]

July 3, 2006

The Daily Courier includes the following in it's coverage:

[EXCERPT]: The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation that includes funding for two programs that will benefit law enforcement agencies in the 12th Congressional District.

Under the Southwestern Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Technologies program, police departments in the district will be eligible for grants to upgrade computer and other equipment.

"Small police departments are hard-pressed to find the funding necessary to buy modern equipment that is essential to the effective management of emergencies, disasters or even routine calls," U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Johnstown, said. [LINK]

July 2, 2006

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article includes this hefty Murtha reminder:

[EXCERPT]: In addition to his confidence that his constituents are in tune with him on the war issue, Mr. Murtha maintains that the election will turn on other issues, which he sees as strengths, such as health care and his efforts to bring federal dollars and jobs to Western Pennsylvania. [LINK]

July 4, 2006

The Herald Standard, Uniontown, runs this article in it's 4th of July edition:

[EXCERPT]: Integral to helping secure funding for various projects along Route 21 and connecting roads, U.S. Rep. John Murtha (D-Johnstown) made a brief stop in Fayette County Monday to tour the area. [LINK]

Murtha's scam...

John Murtha would have Pennsylvania's District 12 believe he's good for business and economic activity in his district. But the truth is Murtha is one of the worst congressmen for creating economic activity for any district in America.

FACTS*:

·        The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) ranks Murtha: in the low 17 percentile in 2003-2004 -- which means Murtha kills off small businesses that create the bulk of jobs in America.

·        When it comes to allowing people to have their own money in their pocket, the Nation Taxpayers Union ranks Murtha in the low 21 percentile in 2005 -- making Murtha one of the worst tax-and-spend congressmen in Congress.

It is time that Murtha's deceptions and misleading statements come to an end. That is why we must BOOT MURTHA and redeploy him back to the Pennsylvania 12th.

John Murtha doesn't stand a chance in hell of losing in November. It's all about who brings the pork back to the district.

You're less than knowledgeable about this race. (I'm in a kind mood today.)

Rep. John Murtha is losing support back home in Pennsylvania.

Do you have any evidence of this?

LOL. He's right, though. It is all about the money.

Once again, Coop...Irey can't win this race being a one trick pony.

Once again, CofC, she's not a one-trick pony. By repeating this ad nauseam you show yourself to be painfully ignorant of this race.

Or do you have another motive?

Worth repeating. :)

"Irey can't win this race being a one trick pony"

Irey can run on her record of fiscal responsobility. She held the line on taxes in Wash. Co. and as a result we are experiencing an economic boomette that would be the envy of the Johnstown/Uniontown area if they were paying attention.

Problem is only a small portion of the 12th is in Wash. Co and so people in Greene, Fayette, Somerset and Cambria may be unaware of whats happening out here.

She really needs to get a photo op going out at Southpointe in Canonsburg.

does anyone have any polls out of this district? i refuse to believe irey has any chance unless i see some kind of big disapproval of murthas job performance from the voters of his district. the power of incumbency is strong.

An online poll wouldn't be restricted to his district or even PA voters. Plus it's not normally conducted scientifically. And Newsmax? Well, that wouldn't fall into my definition of "evidence" most of the time.

But I have little doubt Murtha's feeling the heat. I just haven't seen any evidence (firm polling data, fundraising drying up, people leaving his staff, etc.) to support it.

If Murtha is so confident that he is winning his district, why is he strong-arming the power brokers back home in order to receive contributions? If Murtha's so strong back home, why did he have to take his OWN poll down off of his OWN website?

If Murtha isn't feeling the heat, then why is he spending so much time in his own district instead of wreaking havoc in other districts (so he can become Majority Leader)?

sadly, the bulk of the population in this district is in Johnstown, where the vast majority of people are a)unreformed mid-century Labor Movement New-Dealers b) almost wholly dependent on Federal largess for their sustenance, due to the fact that there has been no private-sector economic growth there since at least the 70's, and c)Pavlov-trained to yank the one-party straight ticket handle on their voting machine.

The Latrobe Brewing thing will be fun to watch though! A/B is planning to shut it down at the end of the month, and Rendell and Murtha are scrambling hard to find a buyer before the election. The leading bidder is apparently a small midwestern brewer, who will demand give-backs and concessions from the Unionized work force. There is already a groundswell of grumbling aplenty, and at the moment they seem likely to a) reject any contract concessions, and b)blame the aforementioned pols if this does not work out to their liking.

Hearing that should be a real relief to Tom Daschle. And, I think Tom Foley might get to relax a little too on hearing this news.
