The first pragmatic reason to be for Gore, then, is that he is electable. He won once. {SCOTUS stole the election.] He can win again. That Bush has been such a clot as a president, such a golem magnifies Gore's stature as a thinking person with beliefs he can defend honestly and persuasively.
Hillary starts out with so many in the electorate--left, far left, right, far right, center--nearly half of the public She is just disliked. The phenomenon is actually volcanic. The more she shifts her ground the more shaky it is, and she has shifted her ground aplenty. Why, if Hillary were to run against Mayor Giuliani or John McCain in 2006, she'd likely lose even her "home" state of New York. Now, I disagree with Gore about Iraq ... On domestic economic matters, Gore is a free-market realist rather than a free-market fanatic. The issues he has tended to are issues on which he is truly expert.
He is not afraid of science and technology because he knows science and technology. And, yes, he did more to foster the democratization of the Internet than anyone in public life anywhere.
His film, An Inconvenient Truth has bonded him to so many intelligent and activated citizens of all political persuasions and social strata that it may be the most brilliant campaign-launch in our time.
Let me tell you a few words about the question as to whether Al Gore has changed. Actually, to me he is essentially the same young man I met in a Harvard freshman seminar 41 years ago: inquisitive, respectful of learning and scholarship, emotionally connected, committed to his friends and family, incandescently smart, believing in an order of the universe he still genuinely refers to as God.

Oh, does it appear that bulb has burnt out. Big oopsie on me.
Hehehe
Indeed. Just last week I was lectured on the Truth of global warming by a fellow employee. His proof: the ice in Antarctica is melting. When I pointed out that the ice in Antarctica is actually growing, he stated that that's the way global warming works, first it gets warmer, then it gets colder. He also stated that the movie The Day After Tomorrow was fact.
How embarrassing for Martin, next he and Al will be caught in a bathhouse together.
...believing in an order of the universe he still genuinely refers to as God.
And there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. What makes Algore tick. As a Pantheist, he worships a pagan god. When you remove the mask you have a New Age wacko.
I think I have found your man, John. Your odyssey need not be a seemingly endless quest.
And here I thought you signed up today just to use that screen name. :)
That turn of phrase was a bit of a mouthful wasn't it?
Is it me or does the author not recognize that "incandescent" is an insult when directed at an environmentalist like Gore?
Surely he's "compact fluorescent".
What I would most love to see before I shuffle off this mortal coil would be Connie Rice skillfully dismembering Algore in a presidential debate. Can you imagine the talking heads trying to tell us how intellectual Gore is?
No doubt predicting a warming trend during the 14th-19th centuries.
I knew peretz and Algore were buddies, but this is ridiculous! Sounds like Algore wrote this and gave it to marty to publish under his signature.
Peretz has been a Gore cheerleader for years. I think they're actually in love....
Algore's biggest asset is that Kerry and Hillary make him look good. Next to them he doesn't seem nearly so hollow, shrill and phony.
You have me laughing with that one. Just like a haiku--short, sweet and full of meaning but you provided graphics. :)
