Two Western Pennsylvania men will belly up to the World Series of eating today.
They will try to become the best of the wurst in the dog-eat-dog world of competitive eating, wolfing down wieners at Coney Island in Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Brian Subich, of Johnstown, Cambria County, and Chip Simpson, 24, of Harrisville, Butler County, are two of 16 contestants who qualified to compete in the contest that's been won the past five years by a 5-foot-7, 150-pound Japanese man, Takeru Kobayashi. He once put down 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes.
The contest, which has been a Fourth of July tradition since 1916 at Coney Island in New York, will be televised on ESPN, proving that competitive eating has come a long way from your grandfather's pie-eating contest at the county fair.
It's become a sport with competing organizations trying to outdo each other in their hunger for glory -- and cash prizes.

He's like 100 lbs soaking wet.
Ya never know... When I was very young I was like that -- 110 lbs and I could take out an entire buffet.
But metabolism and age caught up with me. Now I have to work out for an hour 4 days a week just to keep at 20 lbs over "optimum."
Why I can't lose weight is anyone's guess (even my MD doesn't know).

Dave Barry in a piece on the anti-gas product "Beano" noted that the gas potential in refried beans is so high that it explains why nearly all of Mexico is located outdoors. ---
That's beautiful.

I hear you. I'm nearly 60. If I wanted to lose weight now I'd have to cut off an arm or a leg.

Ya, I didn't catch that. I would have gone for the breasts.

Maybe its just me, but with all the people in the world that are hungry , a contest to decide who is the biggest glutton isnt really that appropriate.
It certainly isnt a pretty contest watching these people stuff their face.
