I was listening to a guy on Coast to Coast last night that said this was one of the most successful shuttle launches in many years....

He would be right. I've been keeping track since launch and there are no real issues at all.
The ISS crew is back up to 3 people and the shuttle is back to being a reliable transport to LEO.

I do believe it is underway. From nasa.com:
Mission Specialists Piers Sellers and Mike Fossum stepped outside the International Space Stations Quest Airlock at 9:17 a.m. EDT to begin STS-121s first spacewalk. They are slated to work outside the station and Space Shuttle Discovery for 6.5 hours.
