Israel will continue its ongoing military operation against Hamas as if there were no ultimatum, and has warned key international players that the military action will be escalated if Cpl. Gilad Shalit is killed, according to government officials.
One senior official in the Prime Minister's Office said Monday that the IDF's ongoing military operation will not be impacted by the ultimatum issued by Shalit's captors on Monday - which Israel rejected - to begin releasing Palestinian prisoners by 6 a.m. Tuesday, or the captors would consider the Shalit "case to be closed."
The ultimatum triggered warnings by various cabinet ministers of fierce Israeli action if Shalit were harmed.
"If, God forbid, they should hurt the soldier, our operations will be far worse," Justice Minister Haim Ramon told Channel 2. Interior Minister Roni Bar-On told Y-Net that "the kidnappers will pay a price they have not yet paid if they harm the soldier."

Do the Palestinians actually think the UN is going to save their butts or that Israel doesn't have the resolve to do what is necessary?

Do the Palestinians actually think the UN is going to save their butts or that Israel doesn't have the resolve to do what is necessary?Yes, and it's a good bet the Israeli's won't do anything radically different from what they're doing now.
Bombing empty buildings and issuing threats does not command respect.

IF that argument were to hold up it would ALSO depend on the Palestinians and some bordering nations doing nothing stupid as well.

Israel is suggesting that they may assassinate Assad. Man, if they did that, the Middle East might blow up. Wow.

"Israel warns countries of esclation if Shalit is harmed" And on the other side of the world, Bush oversees the court martial of American troops for retaliating against the islamic scum who captured and butchered two of our soldiers. Our leaders could take a real lesson in how to deal with islam by watching the Israelis; but instead they prefer to continuously tell Israel to "act with restraint".

I doubt Israel would assassinate him without provocation...and since they buzzed his residence I image Assad Junior is not too anxious to start a military exchange.

My bet is that the soldier was killed soon after capture and now Hammas is in the position of trying to bluff their way out.

"...Bush oversees the court martial of American troops..."
The President has nothing to do with the investigaion and possible charges of those troops. The fact that they are being investigating under the UCMJ is what distinquishes "us" from "them".

Wipe it off the face of the map (Palestine, that is) as Odd Job of Iran is so fond of saying about Israel.

My bet is that the soldier was killed soon after capture and now Hammas is in the position of trying to bluff their way out. Agreed. The doctor who said he was okay was a Pali doctor. There is no videotape of the soldier speaking and holding up a current newspaper, there is no evidence he still lives. I think he's dead, too. God rest his soul.

It goes against the entire history of terrorist hostage takers not to parade their captives in front of cameras.

My best wishes for Isreal. Take no prisoners. Don't stop until no one is willing to lift a hand against her.
