Judge temporarily bars Navy use of sonar that may harm whales

Los Angeles -- A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order Monday barring the Navy from using a particular kind of sonar allegedly harmful to marine mammals during a Pacific warfare exercise scheduled to begin this week.

The order comes three days after the Navy obtained a six-month national defense exemption from the Defense Department allowing it to use "mid-frequency active sonar."

Environmental groups had sued to stop the Navy's use of the sonar in the Rim of the Pacific 2006 exercise off Hawaii. The use of sonar in the war games was set to start Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper wrote in her order that the plaintiffs "have shown a possibility that RIMPAC 2006 will kill, injure, and disturb many marine species, including marine mammals, in waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands."

This idiotic judge and the wacko environmental idiots can shove off. Pearl Harbor was attacked and what if the continental United States is attacked. This needs to be taken to a higher court and the courts need to be told by "We the People" that they are not in charge WE are through the House and the Senate that WE the PEOPLE ELECTED. Let our Military alone! They have to fight enemies today that most people don't even unerstand. Our enemies of today don't go by any rules and these left wing wacko koolaid drinkers don't understand that.

I suspicion that even as we speak al Qaeda, with funding from Ahmadinejad, is working on a submarine disguised as a sub.

Amen. Anybody who think animals have the exact same rights as humans (as ARA nazis think) are hogging all of the Jim Jones Kool-Aid.

If God did not want people to eat meat, he would have had "Thou shalt no eat the flesh of any creature" as the 11th Commandment.

So, what army is she going to use to enforce it?

She must have the baddest bailiff in the whole damn world. Wonder if his name is Leroy Brown?

Early onset Alzheimer's Fur Shur ~ plus, this judge has a really bad attitude toward national defense.

I'd bet anything she doesn't believe that other countries use submarines, and that they sneak into our territory.

If the House had a pair among the whole 435 of them they would impeach this evolutionary revert immediately.

He also probably wouldn't have given us the set of teeth we have either.

Active sonar has been in use for 60+ years

If there was harm being done to the marinelife I think we'd know about it by now.

But this is a nonissue since NO ONE uses active sonar in military ops.
It may be used in peacetime searh operations, but its a dead give away of your position to use active sonar

From the article:

NOAA determined that the exercise would cause no significant environmental impact, and concluded that the Navy's use of the sonar was not likely to jeopardize the continued existence of threatened and endangered species — including the Hawaiian monk seal — in the exercise areas.
