You mean to say that youve been aboard this vessel for two and a half years,
and youre just now asking me what ping means?
Well, Id love to stay here and explain it, but I have to get up to the conning tower. By the way... thats the funny little structure above the deck.

Ping is the same as "List Me" in AOL chat rooms so you can receive all the porn that's being circulated ;-)

It took 20 JERKS and @$$holes to critize the writer for asking a question. Finally the 21st person to respond treats that question with a dignified response with definations. Is this the type of people we want on FreeRepublic? (The first 20 that responded. NO. We want the 21st person that responded in a kindly, informative and nonjudgemental manner. THANK YOU (Fortyseven)..............

Have this interesting Spanish translation of Ping!
"¡Silbido de bala!" which means "Whistle of bullet!"
Seems very appropriate for a South Texas/Mexico Ping List, no?

I don't know if you got a proper answer to your question, as I don't really want to read the sarcastic responses right now.
The term came from submarines and their use of underwater radar. Active sonar gives off an underwater noise which bounces back from objects and can be graphically represented as an oscilloscope wave, or an almost 3D map.
The radar sound is very audible to human hearing, and sounds like a lound PING on the pipes.
This term has been adopted by the computer field as a way of identifying a connection to a remote device (i.e. on the internet)
Like dailing someone's number and hearing them pick up the phone. That's a ping.
Internet users have adapted it to mean contact, send a message, etc.
Your name is put in the WHO TO field for a message, is the basic usage they refer to.
