Fishtalk, you need to go here and read the interview with Andrew McCarthy. While it may be true that some terrorist groups were aware that Western intelligence had some ability to track their financial transactions (and I would caution you from extrapolating reports about Hamas to Al Qaeda, as the latter is worldwide and thus probably utilizing the international banking network far more than Hamas), what they were not aware of until the NYT blew the story was that the CIA was using the SWIFT program to track THEM. The money really was secondary. Some bright people in the CIA figured out that using the SWIFT codes could lead them to the actual terrorists on the ground, or at least the people who could lead them to the terrorists. That's blown to hell now. AQ is just going to use banks that don't participate in SWIFT, or use temporary accounts and fake IDs that will be untraceable through SWIFT now.

Probably the worst part of this entire debacle is that the terror types will all be very paranoid about how any money is transferred from now on thanks to the efforts of the NYT. It's a huge loss for freedom and yet another wake up call for the terror types and their supporters like the slimes.
