CNN has posted the transcript of the discussion on Reliable Sources regarding the blowing of the terrorist finance tracking program with Howard Kurtz, Eric Lichtblau, Eugene Robinson, Geneva Overhosler and Hugh Hewitt. Here are two highlights:
KURTZ: Hugh Hewitt, you've been enormously critical of the "Times'" decision to publish this story. Do you believe that its editors and reporters should be prosecuted?UPDATE: Expose the Left has the video here. Thanks to Patterico, who has related comments here.HUGH HEWITT: I don't know enough to answer that question, because 18 USC 798 has a lot of elements to it, Howard. But I know this. Eric's story helped terrorists elude capture. That's what the outrage is about. That's the widely shared opinion among people with intelligence background. It's widely shared by soldiers in the field, as made evident on their blogs.
KURTZ: How can you be so sure of that, since it was just published last week?
HEWITT: Well, A, it's very easy to deduce that unless every single terrorist in the world, the tens of thousands of them, knew about a program that the CIA didn't even know about when 9/11 occurred, that they learned a great deal.
And B, in the story itself it talks about how Hambali, the most important terrorist in Southeast Asia, was apprehended because of this program. As we speak, I'm sure his associates are reverse engineering everything they previous thought they knew and figuring out how it was the transactions that helped finance him led to him. And they won't do it again. It's not rocket science, Howard. This helped terrorists elude capture.
***
KURTZ: Hugh Hewitt, what do you make of that? I mean, in other words, I think that some on the right are portraying this as "The New York Times" just sort of recklessly plowing ahead, putting this information in the paper, wanting to damage the Bush administration, when in the case of domestic surveillance, they held the story for a year. In this current case, on the banking program, the story was held for at least several weeks.
So would you not grant, at least, that they wrestled seriously with the implications here?
HEWITT: No, I won't grant that, Howard, because Bill Keller won't do any interviews with people hostile to his decision. Eric has turned me down repeatedly to come on my program. And when you listen to the MSMers gathered round there in the beltway, they're not dealing with the real issue.
I'm not proposing, no one is proposing what Geneva and Gene suggest that we are talking about. We're talking about a specific story in which, for the first time in American history, following on the December story as well, major media has turned down explicit requests from the government not to reveal material illegally leaked to them by, in this instance, 20 people who broke their oaths of office, who ought to be discovered, who ought to be, at least, thrown out of the government and possibly prosecuted. And I hope Eric is in front of a grand jury and asked their names.
It's a specific case. It's not a general shut-down; it's not a repeal of the First Amendment. It's a specific...
KURTZ: Hold on. So you're saying -- you're saying you hope that Eric Lichtblau, who's sitting right here, has to testify before a grand jury, and if he won't reveal his sources, then you are perfectly comfortable with a judge sending him off to jail?
HEWITT: I don't know the circumstances of how he would not be answering or who would make him, so I won't answer that. I hope he is called before a grand jury and asked who broke the law, who broke their oath and told him secrets that I believe, as do many other people, including for example, Lieutenant Tom Cotton, Sergeant T.F. Boggs, both of whom have written letters to the "Times" which have gone unanswered...

We're winning.
They're getting desperate.
We have never been in a more dangerous situation than we are now. That is no exaggeration. The world could be saved or the world could fall as the result of what we do now in regards to this.
There is right and there is wrong. The "elite" in our own society have declared for wrong because of their hatred of us and all that we stand for, particularly as embodied by George Walker Bush. It should be obvious to all that he is not some extremist ideologue, simply based on the amount of vitriol coming from those on the extremes of "our side" that are directed his way.
This isn't "business as usual."
This isn't "just one of those things."
This is for all the marbles, folks.
I feel that this is even more fundamental that Mr. Reagan's "Time For Choosing."
The choice now is even more immediate. It is living or dying. It is surrender or throwing a challenge in the face of clear evil. This isn't a tough call. They want to play games with our lives, but would be content if ours were sacrificed to their ideas of "fairness." We want to preserve all of our lives, including theirs, despite of their hatred for freedom and honesty.
I choose to oppose them.
LOL....Morgan..and Alas!, you guys know I wasn't talking about YOU...I was talking to and about those freepers that complained to you two...that is the reason for the disclaimer..
No complaints about you....but, since I don't know who the anonymous grouchy freepers ARE, I am just hoping they are reading this thread...and GET THE MESSAGE...which is:
LIGHTEN UP---LIFE IS SHORT!
ewwwwwwwwww--WORMS!!
NO, NO, NO---don't so that!!
No way are you to blame, just like Morgan, and Alas! aren't to blame...
It is like I have said a few times today..the site is suffering from the "lefty" disease of no sense of humor lately.
NOW, I know this thread, and these awards aren't a "joke", but my goodness..it is like a weekly picnic where we all get together..and if a few people can't take a little kidding, or feel slighted if their "dish" isn't praised as much as someone elses...it isn't the fault of the organizer, it is that person's fault for taking themselves too seriesly.
And, by doing so, they are affecting the rest of the people...and THAT is a shame.
Please, like I told Morgan and Alas!, don't blame yourself...YOU bend over backward to be fair.
BTW..re: the Awards...do NOT let this affect them...it is a fun, different thing for this thread..and a few ants should NOT spoil the weekly picnic. Bon Appetit!
Good, then it's agreed. We'll continue to do as we've been doing. All complaints about the way we do things will fall on deaf ears. Now, if someone violates the rules of Free Republic, then it's up to the admin mods and JimRob to handle it.
As I've told many a person over the least 7 years, the Sunday Talk show thread is not my thread. I just start it. It belongs to all of us, and this web site belongs to Jim. I'm not in a position of authority to get another poster to say or not say anything.
And as you said, "Lighten up, Francis."
Covert Cadre: Inside the Institute for Policy Studies by S. Steven Powell
(Hardcover - May 1988)
Used & new from $0.06
It gives chapter and verse on origins of the anti-anti-communist IPS. It was written when Reagan was still president, and the USSR still existed.
According to a review in the National Review, (which is why I bought a copy on Amazon), "from its inception, IPS has emphasized its 'two overriding goals: dismantling the capitalist economic order and reshaping public-sector institutions in ways that five the Left political power thus far denied by the electoral process.'"
"Three chapters of Covert Cadre are devoted to disclosing the links IPS has forged with the mass media. IPS has long had ties with the New York Times and the Washington Post. A number of syndicated columnists disseminate information passed on to them by IPS associates. Reporters affiliated with the IPS spinoff Center for Investigative Reporting have been hired to work on installments of CBSs 60 minutes and ABCs 20/20."
It was too funny. I swear I heard Homer Simpson DOH!!
&&&
I just realized that one of her problems is she was reading from a script and there were too many Bills on the show. Bennett thought that the long set-up to her second question was for him, because she started by saying "Bill." Also because she was looking at Bennett when she asked it could have contributed to his rational idea that she was talking to him!
But she is probably more on first name terms with Bill Safire. And she just got sloppy.
Laura Miller is a disaster.
I am a smoker's advocate. I don't smoke, but the DP does. It's legal and he has never 'blown smoke in anyone's face,'
Isn't that what the nazis always say: I'm tired of people blowing smoke in my face. No one has ever blown smoke in my face, although I think the DP has wanted to at times.
Absolutely. How could McCain and Congress have swindled us so badly with CFR?? It's the art of the loophole in DC .. that's what passes as service in DC.
Bill Bennett was right and he called it last week. He would be teamed with four liberals. He was PO'ed and I loved his passion. Having to sit next to traitorous trash like Dana Priest was more than I could ever stand. Bill held his own while the wise and all knowing ever arrogant libs kept butting in and making snide faces. The look on Dana Priests smug face was priceless...twisted and full of hate.
That was a GREAT encounter with Priest and Bennett .. and he wouldn't have his fire dimmed, God love him! And he's RIGHT .. Priest was acting so smug and arrogant ... I'm SO glad he got in her face. Yeah! We need to see more of that tune.
Did you notice that the camera went to him when she made that dreadful cheap shot reference to casino gambling? His hands were shaking and he looked like he was ready to strangle someone. The producer had to know that the slur was incoming. I rarely see them show the face of a panel member who is not talking.
His show is going to be must-listen radio tomorrow morning!
I just watched part of the rerun of MTP. Andrea Greenspan is truly a witch, and I loved how Bill Bennet finally spoke up and said: "I'm right here" as they were all talking about him and he was not getting any input. I thought it was interesting when WSJ guy agreed that Bennet was correct when he told the stupid media whores around the table, that the american people are against their traitorous actions. Bill had the last word and he was right -- he warned them, you are not above the law and you better be prepared to accept the consequences of your traitorous acts. But, boy, was it hard to watch. Saffire sold his soul tonight, in more ways than one. A disgraceful display of arrogance, ignorance, egotism, and selfishness by all panel members, excepting Mr. Bennet -- the only adult in the room.
The Bush Agenda: Invading the World, One Economy at a Time
It's published by Regan Books ... guess she's become a total mercenary.
Yeah the talk-, shows will be a brimming with the 4 liberal NYT apologist's v.s the 1 conservative making all the sense in the world.
The one thing I kept wanting all the conservatives to ask ....Why was it so damn important to print? They kept saying it should not have but nobody asked them libs why they had to print it. Although I love that Hugh Hewit got one to admit it might have comprimised our security.
The one thing we all need to realize....no Democrat has come out and defended the NYT but they aren't exactly trumpeting what they did either. The Dems know they are playing with fire on this one. It's a double edged sword for them....they WANT this story out in the hopes it damages the president....and they will sit on their hands while all this goes on....but none will endorse the NYT because that would be political suicide.
They are basically letting the press do their dirty work and letting the press take the blame so they look "above the fray"
Dallas hasn't had a decent Mayor in a LONG time...
And, I really HATE these people trying to legislate other people's choices and behaviors...(those that aren't illegal)...
I moved to Arlington to get out of Dallas County...the politics there drove me nuts...Tarrant County's politics is is much more sane...(except this new Mayor Cluck, eesh).
If I am not mistaked I believe a couple people on the " consultant" list are Dana Priest and her husband as well as Mary McCarthy, and Richard Clark.....the ususal suspects...
This IPS is quite the little cabal
Thanks .. and I agree about Priest ... let her hug her Pulitzer in a cell .. or at least be called to answer as to her sources. I've noticed nothing about Mary McCarthy lately .. I'd love to know what cauldron she's cooking up these days.
