Corzine signs order closing N.J. gov't
By TOM HESTER Jr., Associated Press Writer 8 minutes ago
Gov. Jon S. Corzine closed the state government Saturday amid a bitter dispute with fellow Democrats in the Assembly over his plan to increase the sales tax, threatening to shutter beaches, parks and possibly casinos in the coming days.
The state lottery and road construction were among the first state services expected to be closed.
After Saturday's constitutional deadline to adopt a new balanced budget passed without agreement, Corzine signed an executive order just after 9:30 a.m., a grim climax to weeks of budget squabbling among Democrats who control state government but haven't been able to agree on a budget bill.
Services such as state police, prisons, mental hospitals and child welfare would keep operating. The casinos could be forced to close because they require state monitoring, though the casino industry is challenging a possible closure in court.

A one percent state sales tax is nothing.
I think I like Jr Keans stock on trade sports. Maybe I will invest as Corzine looks more and more like Florio. I remeber how Whitman nearly beat Bill Bradly in very similar circumstances.
As if this wasn't preditable last November!
The key to closing down government is that you can blame Republicans for it. How can Corzine do that?
The casino's probably have the horses' head en route to Corsize bedroom as we speak...
Why increase the sales tax? Why not put in a tax on TVnetworks. Also a tax on enteretainment royalties, Newsrint, Also new paper circulations. Another good tax would be on lawyers. I think if liberal want to raise taxes we could find some good taxes that they can pay. I will bet some more membes of this board can think of good libeal taxes, cant we?
True, this has got to be a big plus for Kean.
.....and old people vote.
I wouldn't want to be trying to get my car inspected about right now.
Even at that he is better than Mendenez.
A real Republican (Bret Schundler) for example, doesn't stand a chance here.
"Though it would be nice to see the Republican in Jersey get their act together and get better candidates."
Wisconsin is this way, too. We have two largely populated welfare counties (Dane & Milwaukee) that suck the lifeblood out of all the other red-blooded counties in the state.
Our House and Assembly are controlled by the Pubbies, but our 'Rat Governor vetoes any and all (sometimes more than once already!) common sense pieces of legislation put in front of him.
It's infuriating. But I'm working on it! :)

I'm glad that they're keeping the"Mental Institutions"open because there's a whole lot of New Jersey voters who belong in them!!Will they EVER learn?
I'll bet you're right! They(toll booths)should have closed years ago(when the expressways were paid for)!!!!!!!!!!
Jersey will be RED in Nov
