Pine Ridge tribal president impeached for abortion support

PORCUPINE (AP) -- The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council voted 9-5 Thursday to impeach the tribal president for proposing an abortion clinic on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Cecelia Fire Thunder survived two earlier attempts to remove her from office since she was elected in November 2004 as the tribe's first female president.

This time, the issue was over South Dakota's new abortion ban that does not include exceptions for rape or incest.

After Gov. Mike Rounds signed the bill, Fire Thunder vowed to work to open a Planned Parenthood clinic on the reservation, beyond the reach of state law.

Will Peters, a tribal council member who filed the impeachment complaint, said Fire Thunder didn't have the tribal council's approval to pursue the project.

"The bottom line is the Lakota people were adamantly opposed to abortion on our homelands. The president was involved in unauthorized political actions," he said after the vote, which came after two hours of private deliberation.

I was surprised and elated this morning upon reading the lead article in the Rapid City Journal. My opinion of tribal politics, and the tribal council went up. Way up. A little success after the beer bust yesterday on Pine Ridge.

Looks like white liberalism/guilt has taken hold of the red man.

Didn't we kill enough of em? Now they're killing themselves.

This entire world is gonna get b*$@hslapped with common sense one of these days.

I think someone thought she could set up a clinic for the white people (and others) to go to, like a smoke shop or a casino.

It appears most of the tribal council did not agree.

I can think of no Indian tribe which has not traditionally valued its children, their future, above all, and I am glad to see that this has extended to not allowing others' children to be slaughtered on their land as well.

If people are determined to slaughter their babies they can still do so, just out of state.

That was the one. My wife read an article that I can't believe, to whit, forty thousand cans of beer a day sold in white clay. I'd better go check that article myself, I still don't believe it.
