Murtha and inducements (...Democrats tip-toeing away from Rep. John Murtha...)
Washington Times ^ | 6/28/06 | Editorial board

Posted on 06/30/2006 8:25:26 AM PDT by Coop

The sound you hear is the sound of election-conscious Democrats tiptoeing away from Rep. John Murtha. As they once did with Cindy Sheehan, whose own Democratic-orchestrated popularity peaked when she demanded U.S. troops leave "occupied New Orleans," Democrats perhaps are realizing their mistake in pumping Mr. Murtha's antiwar views all over the televisions of ordinary Americans who now associate him with their party.

According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, at a panel discussion in Miami on Saturday, Mr. Murtha said that the "American presence in Iraq is more dangerous to world peace than nuclear threats from North Korea or Iran." ...that's a pretty spectacular claim to make, not to mention spectacularly silly. No offense to the terrorists in Iraq, but one well-placed nuclear warhead in Tel Aviv or Tokyo and suddenly their three-year guerrilla war against U.S. troops and innocent Iraqis looks amateur in comparison. Yet such is the fate of media-made politicians who must ever up the ante of their rhetoric...

This has led not a few to wonder if Mr. Murtha's antiwar extremism isn't entirely selfless. Last week, we mentioned his involvement in the Abscam scandal 25 years ago, when [Murtha] escaped prosecution while still being identified as an "unindicted co-conspirator." That apparently led to the House Ethics Committee's special counsel in the case, E. Barrett Prettyman, resigning in protest...

...[o]nce a Los Angeles Times story about Mr. Murtha's appropriations panel's deliverance of $20 million to his brother's defense firm began to gain traction last year, suddenly Mr. Murtha, who voted for the Iraq war, reinvented himself as an antiwar partisan.

We wonder if Democrats, however, especially their public-relations people, aren't regretting having pushed television networks to air that extremism for all Americans to hear.

Bearing in mind the offer I made to you on another thread (i.e. Irey supporters should pledge a certain amount of money for every stupid thing Murtha says) I am sending $50 dollars to Irey.

Originally I had said maybe $10 a pop, but this is especially stupid, so I will kick in a little more. I was thinking about $100, but I had better pace myself-God only knows what the old fool will say next.

ROTFL! That's probably a safe way to go. And thank you for supporting Ms. Irey's campaign to send this horse's *** out to pasture.

A pay raise not a problem (6/28/06)

The Tribune-Democrat (Link)

No member of Congress had the guts to speak in favor of a pay raise, but when it came to a vote, our noble federal legislators gave themselves a 2 percent pay hike by a vote of 249 to 167.

We were not aware that our members of Congress were impoverished, although an awful lot of their constituents are...

As for our area representatives, Rep. John P. Murtha, D-Johnstown, voted for the raise, and Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Hollidaysburg, voted against it.

Wouldn't it be funny if the Dems big "Pay raise/minimum wage" push helped end Jackie's career?!? :-)

LOL...Looks like The Tribune-Democrat's article has already helped.

I think by Murtha voting for the increase he was just trying to make up for the 50 grand payoff he tabled and then never got some years back.

The vote for a pay raise will definitely help Irey--especially since Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, and Hillary are fixing to LAMBAST the pay raise! This will just bring all the more attention to Murtha's cluelessness.

Given the number of stupid things he say I hope you're richer than Bill Gates.....and if you are we need to talk. Have your people get in touch with my people we'll do lunch.

Heh. I figure I'll run up against the campaign finance laws eventually.

What is it like $2000 per candidate? At $10 for stupid Murtha statements and $50 for especially stupid Murtha statements I figure I'll meet the limit sometime next month.

"Ordinary Americans" as if Democrats are so much loftier and above the commonfolk. I'll grant you most of them are not what I consider ordinary Americans. Mores the pity. We associate Murtha with the Dem party because hey, he is a Democrat. Just like Dan Rather he has now become a liability for them.. Here's hoping he gets the boot in much the same way.

Murtha might be able to break us at 50 CENTS a pop. There's a long time until election day.

BTW-I've donated money to candidates before, but Irey's website was especially easy to navigate. The whole transaction took no more than 2 minutes.

A little background. I am not by any means wealthy, although I am comfortable. Last November I was coming off of active duty after my second overseas tour-a year at FOB Bernstein, Iraq with 2/278th RCT.

I had stayed behind for a couple of extra weeks to attend a school after the rest of my unit had demobilized and I was waiting on my wife to come and get me in Mississippi. She was on her way so I got a hotel room and was watching TV. It was the night that Murtha had made his big "I can't stand to see any more hurt GIs at Walter Reed" speech and Congress was putting his words to a vote. I sat and watched it unfold on C-SPAN in a cold fury.

Now I had been upset by antiwar activists before but this was different. This wasn't some ditzy peace mom, hurt by the death of her son, but a former Marine, Vietnam veteran who ought to know better.

Now, I have since learned more about Benedict Murtha and if I had known then what I know now, I would not have been surprised. But from that moment on I wanted him sent home. I don't know if I can afford to send money every time he says something stupid (I will try) but I promise to give Irey my full support.
