Immigration row brings down Dutch government

The Dutch government is to resign after the smallest party in the ruling coalition withdrew its support in a row over immigration, Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende announced last night.

The party, known as D66, withdrew its support after weeks of tension in the Netherlands over a call by Rita Verdonk, the immigration minister, for a Somali-born former MP, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, to be stripped of her Dutch citizenship over false information she gave to immigration officials.

D66, which had been trying to boost its flagging profile ahead of next year's national election, pulled the plug on its support for the government after the rejection of a bill of no confidence against Ms Verdonk earlier on Thursday.

Without D66, the VVD Liberals and the Christian Democrats no longer had a majority in parliament.

Mr Balkenende said he would tender the government's resignation today. Preparations will be made for early elections, initially scheduled for May 2007.

Ms Verdonk, known as "Iron Rita" for her tough stance on immigration issues, had refused to resign over her treatment of Ms Hirsi Ali, 36.

Ms Hirsi Ali, has lived under tight security after an Islamist militant killed the filmmaker Theo van Gogh, who directed a film for which she wrote the script, which accused Islam of suppressing women. The 2004 murder stoked hostility towards Muslims.

Ms Hirsi Ali has admitted lying about her name, age and refugee status on arrival in the Netherlands in 1992.

She had resigned from parliament last month and said she would leave the country after Ms Verdonk threatened to strip her of citizenship.

Ms Verdonk reversed her decision after Ms Hirsi Ali submitted a statement saying that she had not intended to lie to authorities and that her chosen name, Hirsi Ali, was valid because it was taken from her grandfather according to Somali custom.

Her name before arriving in the Netherlands was Ayaan Hirsi Magan. Ms Hirsi Ali, who needs a passport to get a visa for a job in America, said later that she had signed the statement under pressure just to keep her passport.

It's odd how European governments work.

Isn't Hirsi Ali one of the few muslims in the world who actually tells the truth about islam?

European governments work like our House of Representatives would work if it weren't for fixed election intervals.

Europe's smaller territory, higher population density, and reasonably good roads made it possible even in the earliest times to schedule new elections in the case of impasse.

I think Ms. Ali is best described as an ex-Muslim, a status which makes her safety a bit precarious.

Personally I think Ms. Ali should come to America and use her experiences to beat some sense into liberals.

She was an assistant director or producer (sorry can't quite remember) to the murdered - by a muzzie - film maker Van Gogh. The film told the truth about the treatment of women in Islam.

'tis called the Parlimentary system, of course. Israel has a hybrid system after they changed to electing the Prime Minister by national popular vote (from the PM being the leader of the party having the most seats in the Knesset), doesn't work as well...

Yes, I'm well aware of who she is. Notice I didn't contradict the description of her telling the truth about Islam, only the characterization of her as a Muslim.

She wrote the film Submission for which the director Van Gogh was murdered.

I just thought that ex-muslim doesn't go far enough on why she is under a death warrant from the islam-o-nazis.

Yes. She has/had a 24 hour a day security detail protecting her.

Huh?? Please re-read the article...

So the Dutch government resigns. In order for Hirsi Stupidbitch to come to the USA and bring her terrorist family. I call BS on the "ex-muzzie".

I went r e a l s l o w. The Dutch government is to resign after the smallest party in the ruling coalition withdrew its support in a row over immigration
What did I miss here?

Ms Hirsi Ali has admitted lying about her name, age and refugee status on arrival in the Netherlands in 1992
So Hirsi is stripped of Dutch citizenship.
Her name before arriving in the Netherlands was Ayaan Hirsi Magan. Ms Hirsi Ali, who needs a passport to get a visa for a job in America, said later that she had signed the statement under pressure just to keep her passport.
Please tell me what I missed. This muzzie lied to get Dutch asylum, claimed to turn against other muzzies, led to the downfall of the Dutch government, and wants to come here to the USA on the VWP to work. Call me stupid.

Ms Hirsi Ali, who needs a passport to get a visa for a job in America,...

The bad news here is that Hirsi Ali sees no future in Europe as it continues to succumb to Islam. The good news is that she is moving to America where she sees the best hope for her future without Islam.

BTW, she remains a Dutch citizen, has a Dutch passport, and wouldn't be entering the US via VWP, anyway... (not eligible for VWP)
