A Day in the Life of President Bush (photos): 6.29.06

President Bush and Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a press conference (text and video here) at the White House to discuss the war on terror, defending freedom and democracy, promoting regional security and prosperity in Asia (including North Korea), and enhancing closer cooperation on global economic issues (including Japan now agreeing to open its markets to US beef). This is Koizumi's farewell visit, as he steps down from his position as Prime Minister in September.

President and Mrs. Bush will host an official dinner tonight for the Prime Minister.

Secretary of State Rice continues her G8 Foreign Minister Summit visit in Moscow, before a July 15-17 summit of G8 leaders, to be held in St. Petersburg and hosted for the first time by Russian President Putin.

The US Supreme Court issued its ruling on the use of Guantanamo Bay. Bush told reporters Thursday that he would like to work with Congress to determine whether passing legislation setting up military tribunals is a valid option. Bush said, "The American people need to know this ruling, as I understand it, won't cause killers to be put out on the street. I was told this was not going to be the case … one thing I'm not going to do is jeopardize the safety of the American people."

Twins' News WaPo gossip column: Jenna Bush is reportedly going to take a teaching job in Latin America, potentially leaving around the end of summer. (Barbara recently moved to Manhattan, where she has a job in education programming at Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.)

"The guest list included two Japanese-American Olympic athletes _ speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno and ice skater Kristi Yamaguchi."

Thanks for the link...it answered my question of whether Kristi would be there since I know the Japanese love figure skating almost as much as they admire Elvis! And Michele Kwan got to go to the formal lunch when the guy from China was here...

Putin, Rice and and Canadian Foreign Minister Peter Mackay

For some reason that last pix in 28 is freaky! Guess I spent too many years growing up in the Cold War. As usual, Dr Rice is lovely!

I thought (hoped) maybe she was engaged and we could see a White House wedding. Who would get to do that thread???

I would love it if either of them got engaged while their parents were still in the WH. Whoever had Dose duty that day would get to do the wedding Dose. :)

After closer inpection, I think the only photoshopped area is Koizumi's head--someone stuck his head on another person's body. The lighting on his head is brighter than the rest of the photo.

I think you may be right. :)

Jenna still has Henry Hoyer as her boyfriend. The article said he will go to Grad School while she is in Argentina and they will try to keep their romance going, so looks like no WH wedding for this year for Jenna...

I think it is easier for people of my generation to accept Japanese and Germans than it is/was for our parents and grand parents.

Jenna's potential news is in the heading atop today's thread -- some gossip column writer for the Washington Post (meow scratch say snarky things person) wrote that Jenna is probably taking a teaching job in Latin America and if so is expected to be leaving around the end of the summer.

Bush and Koizumi Sing Diplomatic Duet

WASHINGTON -- It's not everyday that two world leaders croon to each other, "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You."

But clearly President Bush has special feelings for Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, and he put them on full display from morning until night Thursday at the White House.

The love fest began with an elaborate welcoming ceremony on the South Lawn and an exchange of gifts inside afterward. Koizumi gave the sports-loving president a bike and an enlarged version of the Japanese postage stamp that features Babe Ruth. The Bushes gave the Elvis-loving prime minister a refurbished 1954 jukebox that includes 25 songs by his favorite singer.

"Prime Minister Koizumi searched the keys and found `I Want You, I Need You, I Love You,'" first lady Laura Bush said. "He and the president sang a duet."

In the evening, the Bushes were hosting a formal dinner, the eighth of their White House tenure. It was in honor of Koizumi, who leaves office in September.

The guest list included two Japanese-American Olympic athletes _ speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno and ice skater Kristi Yamaguchi.

On Friday, the U.S. and Japanese leaders had their sights set on Graceland, Presley's mansion in Memphis, Tenn. Their tour guides: Elvis' former wife, Priscilla, and his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.

The White House dinner celebrated Japan-U.S. ties, complete with a diplomatic choice of main course _ Kobe beef from decedents of Japanese cattle raised in Bush's home state of Texas.

The menu was chosen when the United States was still trying to persuade Japan to end a ban on U.S. beef imports imposed over concerns about mad cow disease. Japan lifted the ban last week, and Bush prompted Koizumi to say before the television cameras that he was feeling "very good" after eating a cut of the U.S. meat on Wednesday night.

They were dining on beef with cracked black pepper, shitake mushroom jus, silver corn pilaf and sesame-coated wild asparagus. The gold-colored china was from the Clinton administration.

Also on the menu: Maryland she crab soup; jicama and cucumber chiffonade; and an ornate desert modeled after a bonsai garden, with a chocolate tree on a base of kumquat-stuffed cherries, surrounded by miniature chocolate pagodas.

The Japanese theme extended to the decorations.

The tables were covered in green silk and large spheres of green cymbidium orchids, which grow in the wild in Japan. The orchids rested on top of tall clear glass cylinders.

Three bonsai trees on loan from the National Arboretum were set up in the Grand Foyer. The menus themselves were decorated with a drawing of a blossom from the cherry trees that were given to the U.S. as a symbol of friendship from the Japanese nearly 100 years ago.

The entertainment was provided by the Brian Setzer Orchestra, known for song "Jump Jive An' Wail."
