A 5-month-old baby died in a minivan Wednesday after the mother apparently forgot to drop the child off at day care.

The tragedy was discovered about 5:30 p.m. outside the Wonder Years 2 day care. The baby's mother stopped at the day care after work to pick up the child and was told by staff that the baby had not been dropped off. She realized then that the baby had been in her minivan all day.

"The mother had forgotten to drop off the child at day care in the morning," said Curt Kreun, owner of Wonder Years 2. "She actually came in the building to pick up the child and then realized what had happened."

The child was in a car seat in the back of the vehicle, according to Sgt. Jeff Burgess of the Grand Forks Police Department. A Wonder Years 2 staff member made the 911 call, according to Kreun.

>>>Idea - proximity alert. Baby seat with sensors. If baby is in the baby seat, and no adults are in the car - baby seat will start beeping. After a few minutes, the baby seat will then page or send a text message to the parent. Failing that, the baby seat will then interface with the vehicle's alarm system and start blinking the lights and periodically honking the horn. <<<

>>>Or when the car is turned off, if the baby seat is occupied, it will beep immediately. Lots of possibilities for interfacing baby seat sensors and the vehicle for the purpose of alerting the adults.<<<

All good ideas, but nothing will replace a loving, caring, vigilant mother who puts her child first, before anything else in the world, including work.

"What kind of monster would enroll a 5-month old in day care?"

One whose husband left her and her child and has to eat?

ding ding ding ding, we have a winner! The Man's FAULT!

He was probably in another state and didn't even know he had a child (until his paycheck got garnished), but it's his fault by goodness!

Good thinking. I was just grieving over one more precious baby left to die alone in an oven, thinking COME ON! WE CAN SOLVE THIS PROBLEM PEOPLE. I for one am sick about how many children die every summer from stupid, inept, stressed out, drugged out, OR WHATEVER, parents.

I've been reading these stories for years. I can't seem to remember a man ever leavning a baby to die in a car. No "parents" are involved here.

What kind of monster would enroll a 5-month old in day care? Good point!

One in America where you either work ... or you go on welfare. Would you have preferred welfare? Not everyone has a financial situation that allows someone to stay home.

I reject your diagnosis, not that negative opinions of my opinions will ever cause me to lose sleep.

Would I enforce sterilization in cases like this? Yes. And in cases where women have a succession of babies they can't feed and raise as well. Short term or long term negligence when it comes to helpless children does, IMO, mean said individual should no longer reproduce . Male or female. If it were a member of my family, I would think the same. If it were ME, I would NEVER trust myself with another child. I would never forgive myself, nor would I expect my family or society to forgive me. Call me anything you like- but I am consistent.

What galls me is the AUTOMATIC negation of personal, legal responsibility when this particular kind of neglect results in the death of a child.
Were this a welfare mother, with nine children living in squalor and deprivation due to HER NEGLECT, and the police found one of the children dead, there would not be this automatic understanding and sympathy for her. She would be held personally responsible ( rightfully) by almost every Freeper whether she was grieving or not!
Do I think months of neglect equal one incidence of neglect? Yes, if the result was death.
Is this child, dead after only hours of neglect, any less dead than a child who died from long term neglect? No.
Death from neglect is death from neglect. The mental state of, or the degree of remorse in, the RESPONSIBLE ADULT does not matter to the dead child.

I find it very disturbing that Freepers, the standard bearers for ' personal responsiblity', apply different standards in this kind of case. I also find it puzzling that LAWS against neglect are ignored in these cases. Why have them at all if the neglect of a child, resulting in death, is exempt from them? Perhaps it's time to revamp laws re. accidental death and death by negligence.
Or are we saying that 'SORRY' makes a difference here? If the mother were indifferent and defensive, would there be any sympathy for her?

There are alternatives to daycare centers (which someone up above called "kiddie kennels".)

Husband and wife can work different shifts, so that one parent will always be home with the children. Having a sitter come to the house is also a good alternative. The children can be in their own surroundings, nap in their own beds, play with their own toys, and not be subjected to every virus and bacteria that comes down the pike.

Daycare centers are like warehouses. The owners don't care how precious your possessions are, as long as they are collecting their fees.

Mothers should buckle their purse to the child's safety seat. No woman gets out the car without their purse..........

Yep.

I can't seem to remember a man ever leavning a baby to die in a car.

Here is one- No charges, but Warschauer faces a life of grief

Here is another- Baby dies after father forgets her in hot car

And another- Baby dies after being left in car all day

The Roman galleries here like to punish anyone who makes a mistake.

Only thoughtless, silly, absurd and completely preventable life-and-death mistakes.

For example: remembering to take the cell phone/purse/shoes/keys/etc, forgetting the infant.

Is it time to start licensing parents before they can have a child?

We have more laws about car owner responsibilities than we have about parental responsibilities.

Too many idiots are breeding these days.

Don't quit FR just because there are some judgmental self-righteous jerks who participate.

I run a daycare. I give the kids lots of attention, especially the babies. They get hugs, kisses, tickles and interaction. I tell the parents about every single fall or stubbed toe. I treat them as if they were my own children.

Not all daycares are bad.

Being an extraordinarily forgetful person myself, my biggest fear when my daughter was an infant was that I'd forget her in the car. She always fell asleep and after driving a bit, it was very easy to forget she was there.

People will be calling for this mother's head before this thread is over.

we'd see an astonishing number of parents suddenly find their memories and tend to their children

I think that way too. Can't hardly fathom anyone being that forgetful, if they are actually a caring parent.

Even now after all my sons are grown I think about them many times all day long no matter how busy I get.

We have alot of self centered parents these days.

Hopefully I am wrong about this woman, but she will feel the guilt no matter what.

I wonder what the percentage is of children who are currently in day care who have a single parent who has absolutely no other option? All the folks I know with children in day care have other options, but would prefer to have the time spent raising their children to themselves (and enjoying the extra money) alone. I'm willing to bet that the vast majority fall into the later category.

Birth control has been around for a long, LONG time. The "pill", which is 100% effective for all practical purposes is available for FREE, has been around for decades.

The notion of "accidental" children is a myth. People either want children or they don't. If you have kids, don't bitch and moan about what a burden that are. They are not an accident.

Mothers should buckle their purse to the child's safety seat. No woman gets out the car without their purse. I know a girl who works with me that leaves her work badge attached to the baby seat. She cannot come in the building without it. So many things they can do.

Pure genius! :)

Another monster here...
both children...daycare 2 times per week.
We waited for 6 years to have children just so I could only work part time.
Before you ask...
No, we do NOT have new cars...(90 and 96).
No, we do NOT take lavish vacations (camping and staying in military housing near the ocean)
No, we DO NOT go out to eat, buy fancy clothes or have big screen TV's.....

Our children are each involved in ONE activity (presently swimming lessons).

We make nearly ALL of our meals homemade with the occasional splurge on frozen pizza or hot-dogs (although last night we ate Salmon from Costco).

That is the extent of our exciting lives..

If that makes me (or my husband) monsters...well then, I guess you better sign me up.
