Over the last couple days, I've received four emails from one liberal reader of these columns, repeatedly asking me why conservatives are so 'angry and mean-spirited'. I tried explaining that while anger is common to the human condition, in no way do conservatives have a monopoly on the emotion. To the contrary, I cited a recent study revealing that, even when controlling for relevant variables, Republicans tend to be happier than Democrats.
Since I was unable to prove the proposition to the reader's satisfaction, I very much hope he was watching this evening's Hardball. For the show provided a perfect case in point of Republican good humor and angry Dem bitterness.
Chris Matthews' first guest, in for an extended interview, was Tom Delay. He had been invited on the occasion of the Supreme Court decision that largely vindicated his redistricting effort in Texas. DeLay took even Chris' hardest hardballs in stride, answering cheerfully and with refreshing straightforwardness.
Fast forward to the next segment, featuring the affable Republican consultant Ed Rogers and Dem consultant Bob Shrum. In fairness, Bob has what to be bitter about, as is well understood by those familiar with his world record for futility as a consultant in presidential campaigns.
Even so, Shrum's raw hostility was breathtaking. The very first words out of Shrum's mouth, without so much as a 'hi Chris', were these:
"The real sleaziness of DeLay's approach was exposed --"
Matthews was clearly taken aback. He interrupted: "Let's get personal right away!"
Shrum would not be deterred, actually resorting to that most tired of attack lines: "Look, how do you know when the guy [DeLay] is lying? He moves his lips."
You could hear Rogers' protest in the background, and when the camera moved to Matthews, he was manifestly mortified by his fellow Dem.
Google gave me that. He looks a little jealous. A little left out.
Aww. =(

Just looking at those pictures makes me want to beat him up and I'm a girl!
He looks a little jealous. A little left out.
Well, yeah! If you look at the larger version of the picture, look what Greenberg is doing to Carville. Is that a thumb or is that something else??
That's TWO new keyboards I'm owed tonight. >:(
Thanks, maine-iac! Let's hear it for the Pine Tree State!
Sorry! I should have put up a warning. I figured it might get a few. I almost spewed when I saw that pic, too.
Send the bill to "Democracy Corps", Washington, D.C.
Did they spell that right? Isn't it "Corpse"?
In the picture of the three, he looks like a gate-crasher who always gets into pictures with famous people. Or drunken Uncle Charlie who wants to be in every picture.
Nah, he looks like an obnoxious big mouth democrat and I still want to beat him up.
Might as well be. They can't win an election to save their lives.
Yr correct, let Him rot from the inside
Democrat......The UGLY Party.
"Would you buy a used car from these guys?"
Unfair to the Clips ... they made the playoffs this year.
Let's cut Bob Shrum some slack. He is like the Joe Bfxklsxt of the Democrats. He brings bad luck to ALL their presidential campaigns. Shrum pretty much doomed his last presidential favorite when he said, "Let me be the first to call you Mr. President," to Kerry when the exit poll results came in.
The only time dems aren't mean spirited is when they're in charge and no one can talk back to them. Then they're happy. Kind of like any two bit dictator...
LOL.
This reminds me of a boxing match I saw at a local park here in Pittsburgh with my dad, I was about eight years young. After being given their instructions by the ref, going back to their corners, the bell rang, and the fighters headed toward the middle of the ring. One of the fighters within just a few seconds threw a hard uppercut right into the other fighter........ below the belt......... right into his family jewels. Ouch!
Just like today's Democrats. Shrum needs sedated.
"angry and mean spirited" ....the fundamental psychological condition of the liberal mind, IMHO is projection...
Sorry, no meant Clymer the periodic writer for the NY Times. About 2? years ago his last name became a well-established alternative term for a posterior anatomical part. As in..... what a CLYMER.
Was asking if those particular Freeper nouns and verbs can might be used together effectively.
