Ultra-Orthodox Jews attack Christian tourists in Jerusalem

A group of 50 pro-Israel Christian tourists came under attack Wednesday from some 100 residents of the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea She'arim in Jerusalem. Three of the tourists and a police officer were wounded in the attack. They received treatment at the scene. The tourists arrived at Mea She'arim wearing orange T-shirts with the words "Love your neighbor as yourself" printed across them. As they neared one of the squares, the local residents apparently identified them as Christians and began to hit them. Police forces in the area stepped in to stop the violence, but did not make any arrests. Police say they are waiting for the tourists to file official complaints.

Lots of discussion of things like this tend to morph into people generalizing about Jews in general beating up tourists, and then it all goes down hill from there.

Mea She'arim has a modesty code for men and women that is clearly posted at the entrance. T-shirts are NOT permitted for either sex.

Additionally, if they were there to proselytize, once again, why don't they go to Gaza and proselytize to the Muslims? Too dangerous?

Gee, I wonder what Jesus would do if he was attacked by an angry mob of Jews?

I assume he'd do the same as last time.

"Anti-Christian bigotry is rife in Israel but we're not supposed to talk about it on FR."

What evidence do you have of that anti-semitic lie? Most Israelis like Christians, and appreciate the support of Christians in the US. Your statement is an outright lie. Do not judge all Israelis based on the actions of a few zealots who like to pretend its still the 17th century.

It's illegal to proselytize to MINORS not adults, as it should be, not adults. There are plenty of Christian missionaries in Israel. Going after children is not fair game and repulsive.

I think it is only illegal for anyone to offer a material reward to convert to another religion. It isn't illegal to preach the Gospel, because indigenous Christian congregations in Israel do it all the time, including street/beach evangelism.

You know he's not going to be able to back that up.

Have you read the thread, or are you just posting crap and running away?

>>Mere words on a T-shirt are not sufficient justification for violence. Shame on these so-called "ultra-orthodox" for besmirching Judaism with their aggression.<<

I agree but only to a point.
If 50 people came into a neighborhood, knowing they weren't wanted there and all had the same shirts with a message that the neighborhood would be hostile to, what did they expect?

People can be patient but sometimes we have to think before doing things.

There are nuts in every group.

Lumping the "ultra-orthodox" together as a group is about as valid as sticking the God-hates-fags-and-soldiers preacher together with typical Southern Baptist.

Lots of variation on a them and virulent disagreement.

All that said, generally speaking, there is an increased movement among the "mainstream" orthodox to get the goyim to live according to the 7 laws of Noah, and assinine behavior such as which you speak would be counter-productive.

I've read your "postings". It hardly warrants a response.

a plan to incorporate hareidim in the Armed Forces. I don't believe it went anywhere.

There is a Nahal Haredi IDF combat battalion and my son served in it.

and two hareidim were reportedly arrested.

Good. That kind of violence should not be tolerated.

What? I didn't mean it like that. Just that I didn't think that the Israeli system was the same as the US. There are some limitations on religious freedom. Heck *I* don't want to be harrassed by those kinds of people either. Please accept my apologies. I'll be quiet now.

That, and Jews don't kill the converts.

Well, if it's posted then the Christians were just being buttheads.

I'm not getting it though. Were the Jewish people Israelis and the Christians tourists? And if the Christians were tourists, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?!
