President Bush, the first lady and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi are going whole hog on their visit to Memphis Friday. They've selected the Rendezvous for lunch after less than two hours at Graceland.
According to an abbreviated schedule subject to revision, the White House says Bush and Koizumi will tour Graceland Friday morning before heading Downtown for lunch at the landmark barbecue joint. There are no details yet on who will be guests at the luncheon gathering in the Bluff City institution in the alley behind South Second Street. The restaurant was closed Monday, as usual, and owner Charles Vergos could not be reached about what he'll serve.
Bush heads for an Ohio fund-raiser after his Memphis visit.
Why would the media give the public the President's itinerary? They are insane....
Anybody who has waited in that alley (while salivating like Pavlov's dog) knows their patience was well rewarded with excellent food.
Her's a shot of the alley & restaurant:
My favorite Memphis eatery is Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken
they only release the details of his schedule that they want the media to print
mine too! I bet it will be hilarious to see how the Japanese guy reacts to Graceland
I've read that Koizumi is a huge Elvis fan.
Rendevouz is one of the only bright spots in Memphis. I don't blame the president for taking him there. Then again, Platinum Plus is kind of nice.
ROFL - You should explain what Platinum Plus is for those that don't live here!
I like Corkys a lot better - their pulled pork bbq sandwich is the best -
Lets just say Platinum Plus has the finest scenery in Memphis.

(not the kind you will see at Platinum Plus)
Memphis' "Finest" were involved somehow. They went there too many times "undercover" and spent too much to find out if the girls were honest? Something like that.
Whatever they eat, they have to get the sweet tea to go with it. Rendezvous has some of the best sweet tea on earth!
Hey, hey, watch it, now! <g>
Actually downtown Memphis has changed radically in the last few years. The building of the downtown AAA baseball stadium, kind of a miniature in the style of the one in Baltimore, then the Peabody Place development and most recently the FedEx Forum, where the NBA Grizzlies play. Beale Street and the downtown shops and restaurants are all really doing well. There's also some nice stuff going on over near the Civil Right Museum (the old Loraine Motel where Dr. King was killed). That area is becoming very much an artist's colony and some interesting shops and restaurants are showing up there. It's still not a great area, but it's better than it used to be.
As to Platium Plus, I remember when they opened that place up. There were picketers complaining that it would "drive down the quality of the neighberhood." I laughed out loud. If you know the area then you know that the neighberhood is full of car dealers. The "gentleman's club" would raise the quality and the morals of the neighberhood.
Rendezvous for the dry ribs, Corky's for the pulled pork. Corky's onion loaf is to die for. Germantown Commisary's pulled pork plate is good and their deviled eggs on the side are really good.
:-)
My second oldest's daughter's late husband was from Memphis. He loved that barbecue place. We never got there, the wife and I but I remember the name from him talking about it. He was a chef by the way, in Las Vegas at one time... long ago. He knew his FOOD and he loved barbeque. BIG TIME!
