You are right and well put. I had not thought of the Warren Court in that way.

I once gave a talk at a Jewish Community Center, which was filled, as the stereotype goes, with knee-jerk liberals. In it, I praised states'-rights and said that the states were the last bastion between tyranny and them. Then I said, "anyone who is Jewish (I am part Jewish) and believes in a strong central government has a learning disability." Now I know we have many Jewish Freepers and I certainly do not mean any disregard (I am not a Jew-hating Jew), but the attacks of those who really are serious about the Bill of Rights and the democracy--which in my synagogue approaches Torah status--on the states, baffles me.

I have never been invited back--and that was a darn good lecture.

Off-subject, sorry.

I am not a Jew, and while I admire modern Jewrey for its accompishments, it seems to me that for the Reform Jews as well as the irreligious Jews, their Torah is socialism. Therefore, federalism is not something they can accept. Reminding me that during the French Revolution the Jacobins broke up the ancient provinces into departments, because they wished to center all power in the Capital in the name of an amorphous "people." It is unacceptable to man that the actual people of Texas might be different in any way from the people of New York or California. It unacceptable that Texans should exercise power independently of others, and have their own concept of mortality. It is, I guess the consequence of New York and Hollywood being the nest of so many Jews. Of course this is not unique to Jews. Other ethnics, particularly the Irish, have the same mindset and for a similar reason. They have inherited the power of the old WASP elites and their outlook as well.
