Senate warms to 'border first'
Washington Times ^ | 06/28/06 | By Amy Fagan

Key backers of the Senate immigration bill said yesterday they are willing to consider a compromise that would delay the guest-worker program and "amnesty" portions until the borders have been secured.

The proposal was floated by Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter in an interview Monday with editors and reporters at The Washington Times. "I think it's worth discussing," said Sen. John McCain, Arizona Republican. "Many of us have said we could work on border enforcement and, at the same time, work on other aspects that would take more time."

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, said a delay will occur anyway because it will take a few years to set up the guest-worker program and the structure to process millions of illegal aliens onto a pathway to citizenship. "We've always understood that," he said, adding that the final bill must be "comprehensive" and include all provisions. "That's the key," he said, after he, Mr. McCain and others hosted a broad coalition of outside groups demanding a comprehensive bill. Reaction at the other end of the Capitol was more muted, with at least one key House leader continuing yesterday to point out flaws in the Senate bill.

The House and Senate approved very different immigration bills, with the House focusing on building 700 miles of fence on the U.S.-Mexico border, boosting enforcement and requiring employers to verify that their workers are here legally. The Senate bill boosts enforcement, too, but also creates a program for future immigrant workers and a path to citizenship for many current illegal aliens.

Sounds like Arlen may be "waking up and smelling the coffee".

Thanks, I was just going to post this and you beat me to it.

This is more of the same. The amnesty crowd still wants amnesty, but they think they can "fool the peasants" with more promises of border security that will never be fulfilled.

We all need to keep pressure up on our House members to not fall for this "comprimise".

Anyone who supports a "comprehensive" bill supports Ted Kennedy.

Writing a letter that I will deliver to my Congressman's district office later.

Some of the Senatahs are hearing from their home states loud and clear.

There's no way the Senate version could please anyone except those who hire illegals.

My guess is that the original plan was to mirror the 1986 amnesty bill with the 2006 amnesty bill. Similarly, border security would be treated the same way. Wink, nod, ignore, ignore, ignore.

"comprimise" = "compromise"

Sorry, my fingers aren't very accurate today.

Same old crap. Lipstick on a pig.
Amnesty is Amnesty, no matter what you call it, no matter when you do it.

What reason is there to believe in the sincerity of this apparent change of heart? I smell a "prelude to a ruse".

I like it, except for the part where Spectre's involved.

Watch out for this one!

Specter was the one who slipped in that (Levin?) Amendment that mandates any border action be approved by the Mexican government.

Gotta watch that bunch on Specter's committee (including Specter, himself) like a hawk.

Most admit they didn't even read the full Senate bill -- and they got mad when a few Representatives actually read it, and stopped it.

As we approach the 2006 elections, even the senators who aren't up for re-election are getting heat over the illegals.

Keep up the pressure! Border security first! Then employer sanctions and ENFORCEMENT! Then we can talk about amnesty.

Sounds like Arlen may be "waking up and smelling the coffee".

Don't bet on it. He and the others on his committee will try to add the 'appropriate' amendments before the final passage.

Notice Kennedy's remark still talking about the final product being 'comprehensive'. Any time 'comprehensive' is mentioned, that means guest work, which means amnesty for illegals.

The late Senator Everett Dirksen (R. Illinois) often declared that -- like Joliet Jake (also from Illinois) -- "When they feel the heat, they see the light."

Now let's refuel and apply the blowtorch for REAL TAX AND SPENDING REFORM!

Well, we might as well sit back for a decade until they just throw the border open for citizens of the "North American Union of Socialistic Countrys".

that would delay the guest-worker program and "amnesty" portions until the borders have been secured.

Let's try enforcement for a few decades and if we can get that down, then we can look at doing the other things.
