Guns are a social conservative issue? I thought it was a limiting of government issue as spelled out in the Constitution.

They had to have one issue that appeals outside the 20% hard core social conservative base. Tossing a bone about guns is a lot easier than talking about immigration or tax policy.

I'm personally glad that since we gave them all three branches of government they've repealed the GCA of 86 and the NFA, so all they have left to address is the behavior of local governments...

Oh wait, we've had 5 years of nothing. I'm sure Party Loyalists will be happy to point out how much worse it could have been...

It's that time again, when the GOP is coming home drunk unshaven & in a wife-beater's shirt, apologizing to the wife (conservatives) for overspending and not securing the borders, and asking her for just one more chance.

What is a 'wife-beater's shirt'?

Not really...but it will show up the democrats for the true hypocrites they are. Do we really need to have the Dems on record anyway? As if we don't know where our senators and congressman stand...Why is it that gay marriage, flag burning, abortion and guns are all coming up in line conveniently 4 months before the election? Once you vote them back into office, all that will go on the backburner - just like it did after Bush won his second term.

Guns are a social conservative issue?

With the exception of some libertarians, I would say so, IMHO.

What could be more socially conservative than the right to protect the home and family?

I don't think most House Republicans have much to worry about.

The Senate is another story. They stink. THEY need to be flushed out.

It's great that they have time to do this now that the budget is balanced, tax-code replaced and they've found a solution to the looming social security crisis.

"Two measures relate to the rights of gun owners. One would prohibit the confiscation of legal firearms during national emergencies, barring practices such as the one that officials said arose in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit."

Kudos. and Kudos to the NRA.

"Social conservatism is a belief in traditional morality and social mores and the desire to preserve these in present day society, often through civil law or regulation. Social change is generally regarded as suspect, while social values based on tradition are generally regarded as tried, tested and true. Its opponents commonly associate it with conservative religious groups, militarism and nationalism."

Defending one's home and family used to be a universal belief.

If the left oppose it in total, then this nation is lost and will never recover. We are wards of the state and deserve to have our property seized for higher tax revenue shopping mall.

House Republicans intend to hold votes this summer and fall touching on abortion, guns, religion and other priority issues for social conservatives, part of an attempt to improve the party's prospects in the midterm elections.

Oh........................

All this time I've been under the impression that the gop is better known as the "stupid party" because the gop elected officials persist in pursuing "stupid" legislation.

Is it possible that the true origin of this moniker is the stupidity of the republican faithful who are stupid enough to fall for this obvious pandering?

Keeping the Second Amend. as law , is a conserv view and issue. The rights we already have should not be taken from us by leftist radicals. That is why that issue resonates with so many fly-over states that have hunting, gun shows, gun collectors and people who actually believe in self-defense!!! Dems want those rights curbed if not eliminated.

Maybe just maybe we won't fall for pulling out these same old issues again. Not this time when this congress refuses to secure the borders and deal with the illegals roaming our country. They've tried fags, flags and you knew guns and family values were due up next. Hopefully conservatives will force them to talk about issues that are really affecting Americans. Not to toot my own horn but my 2005 auto was rear-ended while sitting a stop light last week. Guess who was driving? You guessed it, a non-English speaking Mexican with no insurance. Luckily there weren't injuries but guess who is paying the deductible and guess whose insurance the claim will be filed against. Right again. So while these guys pull out their election year hand-wringing issues, I'll be voting on mine. Securing the damn border!

and you are, of course, dead certain of all of that and are really sure that the democrats will do so much better for us on all the issues than the republicans have done.......?

This "American Values" agenda is another Republican ploy to once again sucker the Heartland into voting for a party that supports open borders, unlimited immigration, and equal rights for illegal aliens. While millions of illegals are pouring into this country because of the Republican Party's refusal to build a security fence or deport illegals, the House Republicans are busy trying to counter a non-existent flag burning crisis. I doubt more than a fraction of House Republicans even believe in their own "American Values" agenda.

Hey - I call it as I see it, and what I see is politicians more worried about re-election than anything else. It's awfully convenient to bring up the lightning rod issues during election time and then forget about them after being re-elected. Did I say the Democrats would do better? No, I didn't
