58 Fireworks Cars Seized (No trial, no appeal – Celebrate freedom this Independence Day)

Followup to N.Y. Cops In Pa. Fireworks Stakeouts (NYPD seizes cars of NYers who legally buy fireworks in PA)

New Yorkers are learning the hard way that an initiative to keep July 4th firecrackers out of the city means just what the warning signs on the highway say: "Transport fireworks, lose your vehicle."

The NYPD has now corralled 58 vehicles under Mayor Bloomberg's fireworks crackdown, officials said...

To get the message out, the city has eight 9-by-12-foot electronic signs that are rolled around the five boroughs and placed primarily at highways, bridges and tunnels.

"We're doing this to deter people from transporting illegal fireworks," said a law-enforcement source.

Police said 161 calls had been made to 311 during the initiative, although it is not clear how many calls led directly to vehicle seizures.

The mayor's office said more than 770 cases of illegal fireworks have been confiscated by the NYPD Vice Enforcement Division in conjunction with the city's Joint Fireworks Taskforce and more than 60 people have been arrested for possessing or trafficking illegal fireworks.

Wyoming has all the good fireworks like firecrackers, roman candles and rockets. I saw some 4" aerial shells in a shop there last year, now that's a major firework.

I suppose no one in the United States sells cherry bombs, M-80s or torpedos anymore.

Bottle rockets (because they go through the air) are illegal, any actual firecrackers are illegal, and fountains that go more than (IIRC) 15 feet high are illegal.

I knew of the height limits on the fountains.......but not the other 2.....because I bought some last year.

You nailed it. Lighting things that go boom.

My wife grew up without fireworks. Last year was her first year with fireworks and she was 38. She likes the fireworks that move or do some trick. Example, they have a little tank that moves about a foot and then fires off about 2-3 rounds. Having been in the army, she found it neat. My wife and daughters also like the fountains that have sparks.

I was surprised when she wanted to buy more this year.

I don't like pop bottle rockets or firecrackers since they don't do much but pop. My daughters love the snap pops which they throw and pop.

Just don't use a plastic bag, whatever you do! As the plastic unfolds and expands it generates static electricity, which causes sparks, which causes: BOOM! Right there in your hand.

Rubber balloons or paper bags should be the least risky way to go.

It just makes me want to buy a maniquien and blow it up.

What a cool idea! Bacon, can we get a dummy to blow up?

Holi, Bacon and I have been best friends since high school (some 20 years ago), and in that time I have witnessed and participated in the blowing up of some magnificent and weird things.

The constipated jack o'lantern . . . the Kewpie doll bomb . . . the bag of acetylene-filled balloons . . .

A few years back, my mother gave Xena's Guy a piggy bank. A real piggy bank, that holds coins and such. We took it out to our friends' beach house (scene of many of our adult pyrotechnic depredations) and blew it to little pink ceramic bits in the field across the street. It was outstanding.

Irony? We have the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments guaranteeing the Right of due process, don't we? Unless of course you're SUSPECTED of living in the same nation as a drug dealer, then civil siezure is OK.

I think it's time for some investigative reporting on the ties between NYC auto auction operators and corrupt politicians.

Several years back, we were at the beach for Fourth of July or Labor Day or some such sultry holiday. Our friends live on the intracoastal waterway canal, which was covered in algae so thick, it looked like a golf course.

We were lighting smoke bombs and huckin' 'em into the canal, and the Dread Boston Salty decided he wanted to eat one. He took a run off the pier and plop! into the canal he went.

Luckily, it was shallow there, and he had on his harness, so we fished him out and hosed the green off him. He stuck to chasing land-locked smoke bombs after that.

Your county must be even laxer than ours, unless they've changed the laws when I wasn't looking. You can't buy those from the official dealers here. Unofficially, of course...

Bacon figured out how to make acetylene when we were in college. He took an old glass pop bottle (7 Up, IIRC), put a handful of calcium carbide gravel in it, added water, and started trapping the gas in balloons.

Fill a few paper bags with acetylene balloons. Take the bags to an empty dumpster (we used the one at my mother's school, since it was late summer and we knew it'd be empty). Light the bags and stand back!

Kind of like how some women love diamonds like a fat guy loves twinkies.

Yes they are beautiful but I can't hardly tell the fake ones from real except for the price and my wife had to have a huge one.

I love her and would buy an even bigger one if I could, after all it's only money.
