Followup to N.Y. Cops In Pa. Fireworks Stakeouts (NYPD seizes cars of NYers who legally buy fireworks in PA)
New Yorkers are learning the hard way that an initiative to keep July 4th firecrackers out of the city means just what the warning signs on the highway say: "Transport fireworks, lose your vehicle."
The NYPD has now corralled 58 vehicles under Mayor Bloomberg's fireworks crackdown, officials said...

To get the message out, the city has eight 9-by-12-foot electronic signs that are rolled around the five boroughs and placed primarily at highways, bridges and tunnels.
"We're doing this to deter people from transporting illegal fireworks," said a law-enforcement source.
Police said 161 calls had been made to 311 during the initiative, although it is not clear how many calls led directly to vehicle seizures.
The mayor's office said more than 770 cases of illegal fireworks have been confiscated by the NYPD Vice Enforcement Division in conjunction with the city's Joint Fireworks Taskforce and more than 60 people have been arrested for possessing or trafficking illegal fireworks.

Once when I was a kid, my brother convinced me to help him make a bomb by scraping all of the gunpowder from a pack of black cat firecrackers into one paper firecracker wad. We were only about 7 or 8 at the time. We were going to use it to blow the door open on our uncle's mailbox next door, but it opened up that mailbox like a flower. Good Times.
When I read stuff like this I'm glad I live in a country (Canada) where it is still required for the government to convict you of a crime AND prove that your property was either instrumental to the crime or purchased with the proceeds of crime before they can confiscate your property.
I plan on being in Virginia on the 4th. What's the law down there for fireworks? Are bottle rockets okay? Black Cats? Dixie Boys?
once when I was a kid, I threw a couple smoke bombs underneath the front porch of a house.
I got a butt whooopin for that.
It's the "fireworks gene." Men have it, women don't.
Those were the days alright. I mowed yards for 50-75 cents.
Gas was about a quarter @ gallon. 12 cent comic books, nickel 3 Musketeers bars/cherry cokes.
(Mammals were finally coming down from the trees . . .)
your born with it. Its not a choice. Its not like there is anything wrong with it. Its not a learned behavior or a mental illness. It's a perfectly natural behavior.
sound like anything we know? hehehe lol.
Bloomberg embodies the worst kind of nanny statism this country has to offer. He should be exiled.
We're attracted to loud noises and bright lights; explosions, loud engines, smoke, electric saws, shiny objects in general. Must have some kind of survival value. Can't explain it. Start running an electric saw through some 2x4's and you'll have half a dozen guys show up standing around within about 10 minutes.
In "The Law", Bastiat referred to such as "legalized plunder!"
I don't know what Black Cats and Dixie Boys are - but you can buy bottle rockets and lots of assorted other things at the local convenience store or gas stations in this part of Virginia.
Our favorite Nanny Statist - at it again.
I'll never forget the time my dad filled a child's balloon from an acetylene tank and lit a rag hanging from it.
We had a sheriff in Southern Utah who announced that his deputies had orders to confiscate a person's car if they even smelled marijuana smoke inside it. He no longer has his job, thanks to the freedom-loving citizens of this state.
My kids aren't denied. I drove 250 miles round trip 3 weeks ago and picked up $500 worth. I consider it $500 well burned :) I also make my own.
Last year We started 3 fires around our house. Luckily there were enough people there to keep them under control. I think We'll shoot for an half dozen this year.
WHERE in Virginia? The laws are the same statewide, but enforcement is variable. Arlington probably tries hardest, countryside not unless you start a major fire. Anything you can put out without calling the FD is not a major fire.
Bottle rockets (because they go through the air) are illegal, any actual firecrackers are illegal, and fountains that go more than (IIRC) 15 feet high are illegal. You probably will not be able to buy them here (some people do have them to sell, but it's bootleg).
