58 Fireworks Cars Seized (No trial, no appeal – Celebrate freedom this Independence Day)

Followup to N.Y. Cops In Pa. Fireworks Stakeouts (NYPD seizes cars of NYers who legally buy fireworks in PA)

New Yorkers are learning the hard way that an initiative to keep July 4th firecrackers out of the city means just what the warning signs on the highway say: "Transport fireworks, lose your vehicle."

The NYPD has now corralled 58 vehicles under Mayor Bloomberg's fireworks crackdown, officials said...

To get the message out, the city has eight 9-by-12-foot electronic signs that are rolled around the five boroughs and placed primarily at highways, bridges and tunnels.

"We're doing this to deter people from transporting illegal fireworks," said a law-enforcement source.

Police said 161 calls had been made to 311 during the initiative, although it is not clear how many calls led directly to vehicle seizures.

The mayor's office said more than 770 cases of illegal fireworks have been confiscated by the NYPD Vice Enforcement Division in conjunction with the city's Joint Fireworks Taskforce and more than 60 people have been arrested for possessing or trafficking illegal fireworks.

What is the attraction of lighting things off that go boom?

Good fireworks do more than just 'go boom' ... they paint the sky in bright colours and intricate patterns with fire and smoke; they accompany the painting with a symphony of whistles and reports. A good pyrotechnic is a work of art, a thing of great, but fleeting beauty.

"I dunno."
"Time...to unpimp ze auto!"
[mash!...thump!...wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee!...BOOM!]

So, what happens if you rent a vehicle to transport your fireworks? Does the city confiscate your Avis car? Interesting...

Gee, I wonder where they got the idea to sieze vehicles without so much as a conviction? I hope there's not decades of precedent built up that will allow this to stand.

willing to slave away for decades to keep a few happy

Speaking of impossible tasks, I wonder how that 4 lane bridge between CA & HI is progressing.

I guess it would be like explaining color to someone blind from birth.

It's like audio porn. Does that help?

It was called an `ashcan' because it was almost a quarter stick of dynamite with a fuse in the middle. My juvenile cronies and I dropped them in the 55 gallon steel trash cans that people used to burn their trash out back in the alley, so they were usually full of ashes.
You light it, toss it in, run and .... WHOOMPH! Then a tall column of ash ascending, something like an atomic bomb, with dogs barking and old timers cackling and waving their newspapers at us and grannies calling the cops, but we were long gone.
What's not to like?

First they came for the cars of pot smokers, but I stopped smoking pot mostly like six years ago, so I didn't speak up.

Then they came for the cars of the guys with fireworks, but I stopped lighting fireworks mostly like four years ago, so I didn't speak up.

Then they came for the cars...

One of the things that encourages a fireworks ban in NYC is the tendency of groups of teenagers who buy the most powerful firecrackers available and put them in mailboxes and other "fun" places.

Fireworks in NYC are more about property crime than about having good, clean fun.

NYC does have some of the most beautiful firework shows sponsored by the city, however. Absolutely breathtaking.

I was stuck on the GW bridge for about an hour because they were pulling over cars and vans searching for fireworks.
I was torqued off.

As for the lady that does not understand it, I think it is a male thing.
Every late June they show the State police using fireworks and blowing the hands and heads off maniquiens. This is to show how dangerous fireworks are.
It just makes me want to buy a maniquien and blow it up.

Can a FREEPER guy please say it in a way that I can understand? Thank you.

If you don't understand, you can't understand.

To wonder why it is fun to blow stuff up, from a man's point of view, is like wondering why one likes to breathe. It just is.

Blowing stuff up is fun. That is all.

>>New Yorkers absolutely report street crime.<<

Maybe that has changed - they used to be famous for not getting involved when somebody was being mugged.

A lot of places have that problem to varying degrees. I lived in the Midwest for about a decade, and their preferred method of resolving the problem was to take the misguided "yoots" and beat the living snot out of them instead of banning fireworks.

Ohhhh did you ever have "Gatling Guns" They were cardboard tubes that held 50 bottle rockets in them. You light one fuse and the bottle rockets launched in a spiral fashion like a gatling gun.

Ohhh funnnnnnnnnnnn. We used to light those, when we could afford them, and shoot them at one another. HEHEHEHEHEHEHE

Fireworks:
In 2003, four persons died and an estimated 9,300 were treated in emergency departments for fireworks-related injuries in the United States (Greene 2004).

An estimated 5% of fireworks-related injuries treated in emergency departments required hospitalization (Greene 2004).

Ladders:
Each year there are more than 164,000 emergency room-treated injuries in the U.S. relating to ladders.
You had better not get caught transporting a ladder or you will REALLY be in trouble.

This is to show how dangerous fireworks are.

That's their excuse for getting to blow things up.

But its OK, because they have some goofy sort of fireworks training, which they don't really have because there's really no such thing as fireworks training for cops, but stop being a wiseass and shut the f*#k up before they confiscate your car. They know what they're doing. Watch this!
