Though few voters are expected to turn out for today's primary election, how they vote in the 3rd District Congressional race is being watched nationwide as a so-called referendum on immigration reform.
In several debates, incumbent Chris Cannon and political novice John Jacob have discussed little beyond immigration. They agree many of the problems facing the nation, from terrorism to quality public education, are rooted in its border security policies.
Cannon has been targeted by anti-illegal immigration groups as being part of a pro-business Republican bloc that is working with the president to pass a soft approach to immigration reform.
As a result of this immigration anxiety that has reached into the nation's heartland, a normally safe five-term Republican congressman is in a tough race with a political neophyte. "I could lose this," Cannon concedes.
Cannon says he leans toward an immigration solution that allows undocumented workers to pay a fine and be allowed to return to their jobs as temporary workers.
Jacob, who calls himself a problem solver, admits he has yet to develop a plan for immigration reform. "I can't give you those details because I don't have them yet."
Political observers say the outcome will be decided by how many Utahns turn up at the polls. A small turnout could benefit Jacob.
Utah pollster Dan Jones says calling this primary comes down to determining who of the few will actually vote. "That is the key. It really, really does come down to turnout," he says.
Since the primaries were moved from September to June and Utah Republican Party leaders closed their races to anyone but registered Republicans, turnout has plummeted. In 2000, just over 15 percent of registered voters in Salt Lake County cast ballots in the primary. Two years later, with the GOP primary closed, turnout was 6.7 percent.
Sounds good to me.

Sometimes you got to break a few eggs, right? To send the message? Who wants an incumbant that cant get the major decisions right?
You know Dane is going to throw a hissy fit because you posted
this article.

Awwww come on. This thread would not be complete without the illegals main enabler.
"Who wants an incumbant that cant get the major decisions right?"
We all know exactly where he stands but he's smart enough to know that if he stated it publicly he would go down in flames!
I hope someone will do a live thread on the election returns...
Amazing how that happens when you only allow people to vote who actually belong to the party that is choosing their nominee...
"Open" primaries are a travesty.

After hearing for months how Bush's "Comprehensive Reform" bill was what
America wanted...the test is here!
Although Cannon has done a 180 since the Delegate Convention in his ads pushing a secure the borders policy, we will have to see if UTAH Citizens are fooled. Cannon is a decent man and has a good conservative record. However, his votes on immigration may doom him.
I'm certain he'll do better than Cannon's last opponent, but enough to win? Seems doubtful. I'm crossing my fingers.
We need this (Cannon) out:

And we don't oftentimes make the distinction between legal and illegal. In fact I think Utah was the first state in the country to legislate the ability to get a drivers license based on the matricula consular and of that I am proud." Click Here to see the Video

Don't do that, they'll rub it in your face if Cannon wins.
Now if Jacob wins, everyone who isn't supportive of illegal immigration, the senate immigration bill or Chris Cannon's immigration stance should no-doubt use their own words against them. Phrases like "Cannon will easily win" and "Cannon will get 60% of the vote."
Keep the pressure on Cannon.

If Cannon wins it will be because he ran ads 180 degrees from the "Comprehensive Reform" Hogwash .
And I know that his future immigration votes will not reflect his past votes,
so if he was pushed to the right on immigration, thats a good thing too.
Either way, I figure we'll get a win. I not worried about Dane.
I guarantee Cannon's future votes onimmigration issues won't look like his past votes.
Excuse me, managusta, but FReepers with integrity ping a person when discussing them in a post. FReepers with integrity don't talk behind someone's back on an open thread.
I disagree, having seen Cannon in action over the years. If he wins, it will be pretty much right back to business as usual.
You'd never go broke betting on Chris Cannon's arrogance.
Cannon was forced in a runoff in 2004 too.
Since then he has moved to the right.
Plus the house overall will not go for the Senate bill under any circumstance.
i.e. Why would Cannon keep sticking his head out on this issue.
Little by litte the voters in Utah and across america are getting feed up.
And Cannon knows this.
So, he may be more mindful of this in his future votes on immigration issues.
But there again, he may not.
