SALT LAKE CITY -- Rep. Chris Cannon, the five-term Republican facing a stiff primary challenge here over his stance on immigration, has lost a comfortable lead and heads into tomorrow's primary in a statistical tie, according to the latest poll by the Salt Lake City Tribune. The survey of 400 voters found that 44 percent of "likely" Republican primary voters prefer the incumbent Mr. Cannon, compared with 41 percent who prefer developer and political newcomer John Jacob, who promises to crack down on illegal immigration. The three-point gap is within the poll's five-percentage-point margin of error.

All polls were taken during the same time period and before Jacob's remark last Thursday that satan was thwarting his campaign and that was also left out of the Wash Times article as was Mr. Jacob's amnesty program called "fastpass".
Shame on the Washington Times in engaging in New York Times and Washington Post like bias.
And Mr. Jacob's saying the devil is thwarting his campign.
An example of Washington Times bias.

i've been trying to figure out what dog you have in this fight because for a man who is so confident of a cannon victory, you sure are worried enough to show these "corrections" every time this issue comes up.
It was the Washington Times that left out the facts(corrections as you call them). If the Wash Times wishes to go down the Wash Post road, so be it, but I have a right to point out their, IMO, deliberate leaving out of facts about the Cannon/Jacob race.
What dog Dane has in this fight.
Dane and others who think like him have a big dog in this fight.
They know full well that a defeat for Cannon is a defeat for Bush's open borders policy. They can't have that since they have been telling us for months how polls show support for Bush's "Comprehensive Reform" policy.
A defeat for Cannon will really show them how wrong they were, just like how wrong they were to support Harriet Miers and The Dubia Port deal.
Cannon is the Vice Chairman on the U.S.-Mexico Congressional Caucus.
Remember Cannon's own words:-
We love immigrants in Utah. And we dont often times make the distinction between legal and illegal. In fact, I think Utah was the first state in the country to legislate the ability to get a drivers license based on the matricula consular card and of that I am proud.
In addition Cannon was the sponsor for H.R. 1918:-
"Student Adjustment Act of 2003 - Amends the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 to repeal the provision prohibiting an unlawful alien's eligibility for higher education benefits based on State residence unless a U.S. national is similarly eligible without regard to such State residence.
Amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to direct the Secretary of Homeland Security to cancel the removal of, and adjust to permanent resident status, certain (inadmissible or deportable) alien middle or secondary students with qualifying years of U.S. residency. Makes such aliens eligible for Federal and State higher education assistance during the pendency of their application for cancellation of removal."
If the electorate in Utah want to send a message to Congress on illegal immigration then they have to fire the Cannon.
Immigration is going to be THE issue in the 2006 and 2008 elections. One can only hope that the Republicans develop some backbone on this and adopt a stronger policy before the Democrats get a clue and do it first (not likely I know). The Republicans may be thinking that there will be no backlash because the Dems have no popular policy on this and conservatives will vote Republican anyway, but I believe that many of them might simply stay home on voting day because of this.
well thats pretty much what i was wondering. whether he was simply a bushbot or is he profiting from the illegal alien racket
The lies keep going on, Buhs and Cannon are not "open borders".
My dog in this fight is to counter the lies you all are spouting about ACU 100% rated conservative, Chris Cannon.
Nope just countering the tancreepbot lies about 100% ACU rated conservative Chris Cannon.
With "conservative" friends like who needs enemies.
All Utah Republicans who want to cast their votes against illegal immigration need to get out their issue voters tomorrow. This is the way to make your voice heard by the DC politicos of both parties more than any other way. They watch these votes.
Yes they do, BTW, how do you feel about your candidate Jacob saying that satan is trying to thwart his campaign, and putting his petty adversity of not being able to raise campaign funds on par with those who suffer real adversity and evil every day, such as victims of violent crime.
I would suspect the latter. He's too shrill and panicky.
LOL! If pointing out facts makes one "shrill and panicky" so be it.
i'll feel great about it if he knocks off an open borders flunky
heres the only ranking i'm concerned with right now

Screw this "100% ACU conservative". He votes the same way on immigration issues as Ted Kennedy, Dick Durbin, Hillary Clinton and 95% of the other democrats and 100% of the RINOs.
Yep some zealous on issue group.
I'll go with such groups as the American Conservative Union, which has given Chris Cannon a 100& rating for the last 2 years, and respected congressman on FR, James Sensenbrenner who has endorsed Chris Cannon.
Well I guess you are saying to James Sensenbrenner, "screw you" also, per reply #18 of this thread.
You really like to screw over your friends don't you, ala tom tancredo.
You don't hear about it here, but I'll bet this issue plays different in different states. I don't know about Utah, but I do know that my sister is a business owner in a Mo town of 7,000 people. she likes the fact that Mexicans come and bring economic activity buying houses and cars. If they will take the jobs at the chicken processing plant, so much better.
