KABUL, Afghanistan Afghan and international troops killed at least 65 Taliban insurgents in battles in two southern provinces, each involving large groups of insurgents and lasting several hours, U.S. military officials said Saturday.
The fighting Friday, coupled with other battles, brought to 100 the number of insurgents killed in the past three days, a record during a two-month period of combat that has been the most intense and deadly since the overthrow of the Taliban government in late 2001.
In one encounter, about 40 insurgents attacked Afghan and foreign forces near Tirin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province, hiding in orchards, along a ridge and in a farm compound, officials said. After a five-hour battle, they said most of the attackers had been killed. There were no reports of deaths or injuries among the Afghan and foreign troops.
In the second fight, 25 insurgents were killed during a three-hour battle in the northern part of Kandahar province, officials said. During the fighting, several of the insurgents "used innocent Afghan civilians as shields" to escape to nearby villages, a U.S. military statement said.

More bad news for the 'Rats...
What was it that that Kipling feller said...
Just heard a Fox News Alert that the Taliban has asked for a month long cease fire....GO Troops!! Let's hope they need a month long wake for OBL and Zarahiri!!
Don't forget the Taliban Washington front. Turbin Durbin, Osamsa Bin Kerry and Al-Teddy Kennedy are still trying to defeat the US.
They didn't get either, they simply are squealing for time to regroup, and they aren't used to getting their asses handed to them so efficiently.
I say no way to a cease fire. Keep up the pressure and keep hammering these pricks all the way back to the middle of Waziristan.
"The News" will soon sweep it under the proverbial rug.
If the NYT could take up a fund for the Taliban or if they could provide them the Top Secret tactical battle plans, they would. They haven't been so far on the side of evil since they had Walter Duranty, their report in the Ukraine in the 1930's, telling the world that there was no famine. Indeed, all was splendid. Then he got a Pulitzer Prize for Journalism. One sign of just how sordid the NYT is that they've never returned the prize despite the fact that everyone knows he was a liar. He was the equivalent of a Holocaust denier, yet they've no desire to set the record straight. Lately, there was Jayson Blair, and now the NYT spends its time promoting paranoia among muddle-minded Libertarians by claiming our spying on al Qaeda leads inexorably to spying on Mrs. Smith in and her Methodist Church in Dubuque. True to form, they've zero curiosity about the WMD in Iraq that's been found. They'll gladly keep that a secret. Anyone who things there is anything to that story, in the NYT's mind is weird man.
I don't mean to rain on anyones parade, but these reported casualty figures sound much like Viet Nam where you shoot into a bunch of bannana trees and report them as casualties.
Hell I'd like to see 10 or 20 times the taliban casualties but are the reports accurate?
"The vaunted taliban "spring offensive" that the NY Times was swooning over seems a little less than effective."
I disagee. It was very effective in KILLING Taliban.
"..... they aren't used to getting their asses handed to them so efficiently."
hell, they should be used to it by now...lol...our troops have been handing their asses to them over and over again since 2002!!
BWAHAHAHA! They're SOOOOO on the run. Now's the time to stomp them flat.
< /s>
Yep. If its good for our Soldiers, then its bad for the Rats.
LOL. Must need to re-stock the virgins.
Now that's strange. In 2001 and 2002 the MSM was telling us the Taliban owned the winter (because of the mountains and snow, and Americans have never seen mountains or snow).
"....are the reports accurate?"
Must be...the Taliban just asked for a month long cease fire....lol!! GO Troops!
Heard it too. Wonder how long it'll take the NY Slimes to print that, if ever.
I haven't forgotten. If I was CIC, I'd have all three in prison right now awaiting the firing squad.
The last time there was a proposed cease-fire, a bunch of them escaped from Tora Bora.
