Police sting nabs flashers on New York subway

New York police said they had nabbed 13 flashers and gropers in a recent sting operation on the city subway system that used undercover policewomen as bait.

"We hope there'll be deterrent value for potential perpetrators who recognise their victim may be a police officer," said Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne.

The two-day sting mission, dubbed "Operation Exposure," was actually carried out in May in response to increased complaints from women commuters of men behaving lewdly on the subway network.

The sting involved a number of female police officers who posed as businesswomen and rode the trains during rush hour.

The 13 suspects were charged with forcible touching or public lewdness -- all during the morning and evening rush hours of May 23 and 24.

"It's always been a problem. It's a recurrent problem," a police spokesman said.

Recently, victims of flashers have started fighting back by snapping pictures of their tormentors with their mobile phones and posting them on the Internet with a public warning.

I have never been on a NY subway. Sounds like a real blast.

It is far and away the fastest, cheapest way of getting around town. You can go from the Easternmost point in Brooklyn to the Northernmost point in the Bronx for $2. Can't beat it.

"Can't beat it."

This seems a bit fishy.

It makes it sound like a handful of women in a few days work, just during rush-hour, wrangled a dozen unwanted advances, provoked to the point of misdemeanor or even felony.

Not even the NY subway could be that bad.

How, in heaven's name, were they dressed?

Is there a libertarian out there who agrees that flashing should be illegal? Who's harmed by flashing?

It's rude, it's lewd, it's offensive, sure. You can add shocking, disgusting, and insulting. I certainly agree.

But lots of activities in public can be described that way. Should those be illegal?

Just curious, libertarians.

I heard a policeman say that a lot of people feel that prostitutes, flashers, etc. are "harmless". He pointed out that most of the people that partake in those trades are drug users and criminals and the problems can spread rapidly to the neighborhoods if not held in check. Or something to that effect.

FYI, the NYC subways could be that bad. In Japan, where the women are culturally less inclined to fight back, the problem is so bad that they not only have "anti-chikan" (anti-molester) posters in the subway but also, for example, run women-only train cars out of Shibuya late at night. The real problem is that in a really crowded train, it can be difficult for a woman to know who is groping her or to bring her arms around to do anything about it. Some men are just slime.

The real question is why would you want to?

They're not groping, they're just touchy feely Democrats.

I apologize if I sound rude, but that's just a very bizarre question.

People live and work here. For example, my mother grew up in Queens (north of Brooklyn) but went to high school in Upper Manhattan (on the VERY Upper West Side). How else was she going to get there? Public schools here don't run school buses. Kids take the subway or public buses. What about the person who lives in Queens and works in Lower Manhattan? How else do you propose they get to work? Or the person from the Bronx who wants to take in a Staten Island Yankees game on Staten Island? Or me, the Manhattanite, who wants to see the Mets in Queens or the Cyclones (Mets single-A team) in Brooklyn? How else would I get there?

The overwhelming majority of us don't have cars. How else do you propose that we get around?

PS -- I have never been flashed or groped in New York, and I've lived here for all but 7 of my almost-50 years. I was, however, flashed in Paris, on the Metro, back in 1980. The guy wore the "traditional" trench coat.

Be careful what you wish for.

It's just like the nude beach thing...you go there thinking "Playboy", and what you get is more along the lines of "National Geographic".

It is an offender based crime

If the flasheee is not offended then there is no crime.

It's a stigma associated with your locale brought about by various movies, crime shows, etc.

I'm an old-time Detroiter, and I can tell you that Detroit is viewed by most as the seventh circle of hell...mostly by people who have never been to Detroit.

I have called it an "armpit" in the past, but I still have a soft-spot for the city.

It's a nice place to be...just be in the right place.

"John Kerry of Massachusetts and Russ Feingold of Wisconsin want to pull out all combat forces over the next year, a proposal that delights the left wing of the Democratic Party but that failed overwhelmingly in the Senate on Thursday."

One has to ask exactly why that "delights the left wing of the Democratic Party"?

It can't be said they give a darn about the Iraqi people.

It can't be said they give a darn about the US soldiers.

It can't be said they give a darn about the security of America.

So what can be said about their "delight"? What is it that AP(The Democrats' Attack Dog) refuses to admit?

It can be said that they give a darn about their political gain from a perceived US defeat.

That is what "delights" them so and can only be thus because they have no soul.

Well...there was the famous Today Show flasher. I found a link for it, but it gave me the famous Error 404, so I can't post it. Also, from my neck of the woods....there's this from July 2005:

FREDERICK, Md. - A woman is facing two counts of indecent exposure after flashing a mother and daughter in a Frederick park.

The victim reported that she and her 12-year-old daughter observed Lisa Stull and a male companion engaged in an intimate act on a bench at Frederick's Memorial Park Tuesday afternoon.

The woman told police that she confronted the pair on the bench and told them they shouldn't be behaving intimately in public.

Then she says, Stull removed her shorts and exposed herself.

That's OK. Your post was somewhat related to this article. Dems have been exposing themselves in a lot of ways. May it continue through the November elections.
