No one died and the plot never got off the ground, thank goodness, but America yesterday got another chilling reminder of the threat from the homegrown enemies next door.
Federal agents busted a group of al Qaeda wannabes with dreams of destroying the Sears Tower in Chicago and several federal buildings in Miami.
Much of law enforcement's success surely is due to the kinds of warrantless-surveillance programs loudly decried by Democrats and the civil-liberties crowd - including the financial-transactions monitoring that was disclosed Thursday.
But this latest plot offers a troubling glimpse of a homegrown fifth-column group on U.S. soil - whose members have no record of ties to terrorism but who suddenly are seized with a fierce desire to wage jihad against America.
The so-called Seas of David, a Black Muslim offshoot, seems at first glance like a cult of kooks with visions of bloody jihad. But then, many might have said the same about al Qaeda before 9/11.
It's also true that the group posed no real danger beyond a lot of talk. But that's only because its plot unraveled early, thanks to an informer. Members had contacted someone they believed (wrongly) was linked to Osama bin Laden. They'd asked for $50,000 in cash, terrorist training, weapons, vehicles and other supplies - after pledging an oath to al Qaeda and a promise to "kill all the devils we can."
As U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta noted: "They certainly had the will. They were searching for a way."

Listening to the news on the radio yesterday afternoon, the talking heads being quoted in the news stories already had the perps being found not guilty by whatever jury hears the case because they hadn't done anything and didn't have a stockpile of explosives. Their intent and desire to kill people and blow up things because of their announced allegiance to Al Quaida was "not worth of convicting them."
I wish those 'talking head' folks had a brain in their head, or to be working out of one of the targeted buildings, and see if that changes their view--knowing that they had the potential to be on the receiving end of the explosives.

Not sure if the Miami killers were muslims or maybe just black racists. Was a similar case in San Francisco, in the 1970s I think. That was a horrific killing spree, and some white people were actually kidnaped, raped, tortured as I recall. It might have been big news at the time but now of course no one hears a word about it.

They should have been rebuilt taller and a set of lights put on top of them that remained streaming up into orbit. That would have been a helluva memorial.

Unfortunately, their IQ's doesn't deter them from being cold blooded killers. Check out the intelligence of the average killer in prison.
Let's pray that one of these groups doesn't locate next door to you, not that it would concern you necessarily, but some of your more informed and enlightened neighbors might be, understandably, alarmed.
Before the world, we had an opportunity to proudly display American courage, optimism, and ingenuity.
We squandered this to memorialize the terrorist act.

NYC is just like New Orleans, the billions that was sent there went into the pockets of liberal special interest thieves.
It SHOULD be a national disgrace.
