Speed-Hump Fight Jars Parents
The Washington Post ^ | 6/23/06 | Annie Gowen

...A debate over whether to place speed humps on North 35th Street in Arlington County has generally pitted the families in the modest brick ramblers in one neighborhood against the empty-nesters living in the white-columned homes of another. The parents say their kids need safer streets; the other side says the humps are unsafe. Herring describes the pitched battle as "class warfare at its worst."

Community meetings have turned into shouting matches worthy of Britain's House of Commons. "Keep Kids Alive -- Drive 25" signs have been stolen from yards. Fliers and counterfliers are flying. A signature drive was launched.

It's neighbor vs. neighbor in Arlington -- over four speed humps....

The neighbors where I live are terrible about letting their young kids play outside unattended. They're always in the street, .

These must be the same people who let their kids sit in the middle of the store aisles. The tots are oblivious to anything but the toys they are playing with, and the parents don't care to move them. Seems like the parents train them from birth to have zero consideration for others, and to expect everyone to accomodate their bad habits. Not to mention the safety hazard. And Darwin can only handle so much of a caseload at one time.

Least they can't campaign for those "don't back up severe tire damage will result" devices you find all over California.

The Speaker of the Virginia House made sure we will not have any speed cameras, nor red-light runner camers, nor anything else that might deter him in speeding about through the Commonwealth visiting different constituents.

If little children die for his convenience, rest assured he simply does not care. He's a hard man Fur Shur.

The cameras were nothing but a money maker for the local governments. If you look they tended to be installed at locations that had few accidents but are prone to red light running because of poor light timing/street design.

Is a "Speed Hump" anything like a "Nooner"?

The local governments never installed photo radar on residendial streets - it wouldn't be profitable enough for them.

Oh, we have one in the garage.

Do you race it up and down residential streets at 70-80 mph with "children at play" signs and two parks? If not, ok. If so, I hope you hit a speed bump.

I looked. Most were at intersections with a record of red-light running.

You really can't justify high volumes of red-light runners you know.

I think you must be thinking of DC's light system for catching speeders. The answer there is, of course, don't speed.

In Virginia, you guys shouldn't have been running red lights, and you would have been able to stop the lightmeisters in their capitalist footsteps.

As it is I'm happy we have "shall issue" and "open carry" in our law. You just never know when you are going to need to confront some yahoo who just tried to murder you with a 3,500 LB SUV at the intersection down the street.
