MIAMI (Reuters) - Seven people arrested in Miami planned attacks on the landmark Sears Tower in Chicago and other buildings as part of a pledge to al Qaeda to wage war against the United States, U.S. prosecutors said on Friday.
An indictment handed down against the men by a grand jury in south Florida said they sought to gain support from Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda in order to destroy FBI buildings in the United States. At least one of them also plotted to blow up the 110-story Sears Tower in Chicago, it said.
The men, named as Narseal Batiste, Patrick Abraham, Stanley Grant Phanor, Naudimar Herrera, Burson Augustin, Lyglenson Lemorin and Rotschild Augustine, were due to appear in a Miami magistrate's court later on Friday.
They were arrested on Thursday after heavily armed FBI agents and other law enforcement agencies swooped on a warehouse in one of Miami's poorest neighborhoods, Liberty City, a predominantly black area that has witnessed some of Miami's worst race riots.
A man identified as a member of the "Seas of David" religious group told CNN on Thursday that five of his fellow members were among those arrested and that they had no connection to terrorists.
"We are not terrorists. We are members of David, Seas of David," said the man, identified as Brother Corey. He said the group had "soldiers" in Chicago, but reiterated it was peaceful movement.
The indictment said all of the defendants also referred to themselves as "Brothers."
U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was to participate in an FBI news briefing in Washington on the arrests at 10:30 a.m. EDT/1430 GMT and more details were to be given at another FBI news briefing later Friday in Miami.
A parade through Miami to celebrate the victory by the Miami Heat team in the National Basketball Association championship, expected to attract about 200,000 people, was still due to go ahead on Friday and the authorities stressed that citizens were never at risk.
The defendants were given by an FBI informant, a law enforcement source said.
It was unclear what impact if any the arrests might have on public opinion ahead of mid-term congressional elections in November, and amid a deep slump in President George W. Bush's popularity and in public support for the Iraq war.
Hey boatha, whass up dow em Miama? A bid too mush sun?
Very bizarre.
No agenda there, huh. Isn't it fascinating how Reuters sees every news story through their distorted prism of Bush-hatred? In the Reuters world, the weekend weather forecast is hot, humid weather with a chance of thunderstorms, but it's not clear what impact, if any, the weekend weather might have on public opinion ahead of mid-term congressional elections in November, and amid a deep slump in President George W. Bush's popularity and in public support for the Iraq war.
Leave it to Reuters to slant this article. Pathetic commies.
I liked the Reuters story last night. They were described as "people" in the headline. The word "Muslims" was nowhere to be found.
Sure don't sound like "Domestic" names....
I find it surprising that GOOGLE has never heard of "Seas of David".
Here in Florida the news tickers were refering to them as "radical black muslims". Funny, I don't see that anywhere in any of the MSM news...
Are these people stupid? We have tens of millions of foreign nationals, many of whom are here illegally, living within our borders. Many of these consider America to be the "Great Satan."
These mooseSlime worship the devil who, in turn, promises to reward them if they manage to kill "non-believers" while killing themselves.
And some idiot has the temerity to suggest innocents are not at risk?
(Excuse me while I puke.)
Brother Cory, as the black man with dreadlocks called himself,
...refused to provide the names of those arrested, insisting his group was a religious organization: "We study Allah and the worship of the regular Bible."
I thought it interesting that there was a possible connection to Black Muslims!
CNN was "exploring" that and other possibilites with an "expert" last night who seemed reluctant to go there as well.
"Seas of David" makes NO sense.....SEEDS of David could make sense as a name but SEAS of DAVID means what??
the "regular bible"? what is the "regular bible"?
versus the irregular bible? Oh I get it. He's talking about the bible that says it's ok to murder people in cold blood. Isn't that called the Koran?
> the "regular bible"? what is the "regular bible"?
You know, not the diet one. The one with the full complement of sugar and caffeine.
> The men, named as Narseal Batiste, Patrick Abraham, Stanley Grant Phanor, Naudimar Herrera, Burson Augustin, Lyglenson Lemorin and Rotschild Augustine...
Huh. Reads like a list of characters from "Harry Potter and the Ill-Conceived Terrorist Plot."
I've heard that too. Cept the MSM seems to be ignoring it. As per usual.
And it seems in the press conf they deflected the question that they may be Black Muslims ... yet did say some had prior jail time which is where most Black Muslims come from. Hiding this fact is not going to make it go away!
