Flag burning — again (MoonBats UNHINGED-election year revival of that mother of all non-issues)
Register-Guard ^ | Thursday, June 22, 2006

If anyone needs further proof - not that anyone does these days - that the Republican leadership in Congress is both desperate and clueless, it's the election-year revival of that mother of all non-issues: flag desecration.

The U.S. House passed this tread-worn measure last year, and the Senate Judiciary Committee approved it last week. Even though Congress has no shortage of real issues, ranging from the war in Iraq to global warming, clamoring for its attention, the full Senate will begin debate next week on a proposed constitutional amendment to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

As if that weren't dismaying enough, here's worse news: Even though the proposal has repeatedly been defeated in the past, supporters are within just a vote or two of passing this great flapping albatross of an amendment. If that happens, it would go to the states for ratification, and it's unnerving to remember that legislatures in all 50 have adopted resolutions in support.

So, once more we rise wearily to point out the obvious - a constitutional amendment allowing Congress to criminally punish the "physical desecration" of the American flag isn't needed because no one is out there burning flags. Even if they were, the First Amendment states with unmistakable clarity that Congress shall "make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech." That applies to everything from Ku Klux Klan marchers to federal lawmakers who wear stars-and-stripes neckties.

Look, your unwillingness to be willing to protect the flag is pretty clear.

Have fun protecting the flag, but don't stay out too late. Meanwhile, the adults will be protecting the country.

The Founding Fathers certainly gave that impression in their writings.

Jefferson especially.

..It's simple...if you're going to allow flag-burning protests as a free-expression issue, then you should allow setting the flag-burners on fire as an acceptable method of joining the debate. It's only fair.....

"So we raise her up every morning,
Take her down every night.
We don't let her touch the ground
And we fold her up right.
On second thought I DO like to brag,
'Cause I'm mighty proud of that Ragged Old Flag."

If the Republican don't soon wake up and see that they are in charge the glass will keep draining, unfortunately. Flag and marriage amendments are not on most Americans top 100. Getting an immigration bill is.

I don't think so, secure the borders, enforce existing laws, penalize employers who hire illegals, deportation when found ..... fund existing laws.

Never mind that the flag existed before the current constitution which is where your copyright law derives its authority.

The copyright I'm speaking of is permanent and never expires.

Flag, marriage and immigration constitute a major chunk of the things that affect lives lived down there on the bottom rungs in "flyover country", or "among the masses".

The Countryclub Republicans and Limousine Liberals might think these are trivial issues, but they don't have the votes.

Don't disagree all of these are important, and to the American people. But every poll I've seen shows most Americans want these same things, but also want something akin to the Senate version too. Since the Republicans are in control of Congress, and since most Americans want a comprehensive solution, and since no bill will happen, I think the Dems will use this as their centerpiece this Fall.

Immigration definitely, but I've yet to see a poll of priorities showing either flag or the marriage amendment in the top 25. These things will do nothing for the security of our Nation, nor the economy or about any other issue Americans find on their radar. Someone burns a flag about once every year. The real flag abuses are the thousands of well meaning Americans who wear them as clothes, mishandle them, fly them dirty and in inclement weather, and store them incorrectly. As for the marriage amendment, it may do a few things like infringe on the powers of the states, but it will do nothing to protect the institution of marriage. Our Constitution is too important for meaningless statements.

And I also live in flyover country.

...and was written by Santa Claus?

You realize, of course, that a copyright does not limit the public's ability to destroy copies anyway they wish. Even if your hypothetical copyright existed, it would not matter in this debate.

You missed the point ~ immigration, flag, marriage, God, country, mother, apple pie, etc. ARE OF A PIECE.

Only a fool would accept part while rejecting the other.

Most Americans think the Congress has enough issues to deal with without taking on apple pie. But you could be right. We'll see how the Repubs sell it in November.
