Iowa congressman apologizes for jest
Associated Press (excerpt) ^ | June 21, 2006

DES MOINES, Iowa - An Iowa congressman apologized Wednesday for disparaging comments he made last week at the state Republican convention about a veteran White House correspondent.

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, was discussing the June 7 death of terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi on Saturday when he mentioned 85-year-old Helen Thomas, who has covered the White House for nearly 50 years and is a columnist for Hearst Newspapers.

"There probably are not 72 virgins in the hell he's at," King said about al-Zarqawi, in a recording transcribed by Radio Iowa. "And if there are, they probably all look like Helen Thomas."

First year Law School: "The truth is an absolute defense". No apology to "Miss Gargoyle of 312 B.C" necessary.

Probably apologizing for stealing jokes from FR without attribution. That one has been floating around the site for years.

PLEASE!! Those photos should qualify as WMDs....... :^)

I'm glad the joke was made, I'm only sorry the Congressman feels he had to apologize to that vicious, hideous hag..... surely she's never apologized to any of the Republicans of whom she has said far far worse.

Helen Thomas a virgin?!?! I suppose it's possible; I mean, after all.......

She's been around so long, she may in fact be the reason burquas were invented.

Why, Helen Thomas is so ugly........she'd make a freight train take a dirt road!

If looks could kill, she'd be the only one left standing at the WH briefings!

His stock in '08 just went up immeasurably (even if he apologized), and that isn't an easy thing as he is already way up there on the list of up and comers, imo.

say something outrageous to get attention,

Well, I'm laughing so hard, I can hardly type. I never thought I'd live to see the day when I needed to come to Steve King's defense. Ordinarily, he's quite capable of defending himself.

Unfortunately, I haven't noticed him here this evening, so I want to point out; Mr Sinkspur; that you have totally misjudged the Congressman.

I've known Steve for 10, maybe 15 years. He is the hardest working public policy specialist I've ever watched work. Furthermore, he's not afraid to step up to the plate and do (or say) what needs to be done (or said).

You don't have to agree with King 100% of the time to appreciate his straight forward approach. You always know where you stand with the guy. How many other CongressCritters can we say that about.

You're wrong about Steve King, Sinkspur. Dead Wrong.

Good thing he wasn't addressing the Klan, eh?

...say something outrageous to get attention, especially when you're from a cornfield.

You'd never do anything like that would you stink?

What the hell is King apologizing for?

The first scribe that wrote down the Koran was dyslexic. Jihadists only rate one 72 year old virgin.

In Helen Thomas, he got one that sat on the shelf waiting for him for 13 extra years, so what...

Helen and Zarqawi deserve each other.

The first known use of a pork chop necklace was on young Helen Thomas.
