I've lives in California all my life, and I've been hearing this since I was about 5. How is this news? "The Big One" is about as much a part of California lore as the 49er legends.

OTOH, developers are having a field day in the desert nowadays. 30 years ago a big quake out there would have shaken the hell out of the Marine base and damaged the resort cities, but the major population centers were far enough away that serious damage would have been minimal. Nowadays we have developers building practically right on top of the fault, and the cities in the desert are getting HUGE...LA has sprawled all the way out there.

A big quake would be very, very bad for them, but that's the price of living in California :)

People who lived in New Orleans knew they lived below Sea Level, and had been hearing about levees breaking their whole lives too.... it was "lore".... it was completely discounted because "I've lived here my whole life and nothing has ever happened."

That's always when it happens. Just when everyone believes it will never happen.

(They don't call them 500-year floods for nothin', and they don't call them cataclysmic earthquakes for nothin'.)

I live in Mass. Why do I get the feeling that I will be paying the price for living in California?

;)

Hmmm? This sound very much like the attitude I heard in NOLA through the years ("NOLA is like a soup bowl, we live 12 ft under the waterline.") things of that nature. Look how prepared they were and also look how they came out of the Katrina disaster.

The price of living in California is having to see Californians every day.

The big one would just take a few of them out. :)
