The horrific deaths of two American servicemen kidnapped in Iraq on Friday may bring the war into a new phase - and force politicians, media stars and Americans generally to put real meaning behind the meaningless guarantee that "we all support the troops." Previous American kidnap victims have been unarmed civilians - contractors and journalists who were not trained to kill. The decision to snatch soldiers changes things, which was almost surely the point. Privates Thomas Tucker and Kristian Menchaca, may God protect their souls, were taken from a checkpoint they were manning; one of their comrades in arms, David Babineau, was killed during the assault.
It's one thing to plant improvised explosive devices that wound and kill our armed forces. That kind of attack is what makes this a war. The insurgents can't fight us head on, so they use quick and dirty methods of assault.
But the kidnapping and apparent torture/murder of Privates Tucker and Menchaca may represent a new strategy. If similar kidnap efforts are successful, if this event was not a fluke but an ambitious new tactic to throw Coalition forces off-balance, then things are going to change in Iraq.
Al-Qaeda-in-Iraq likely hopes to make service personnel believe themselves at risk of death by torture from any band of Iraqis they encounter - so that they'll act differently: cautious, suspicious, with the hypervigilance of someone in the midst of a battle. If it works, civilians who mean our armed forces no harm may find themselves shot or killed by mistake as a result of the hair-trigger posture our forces will have to assume to keep themselves safe.
Could anyone blame them?

People who are offereing Aid and Comfort to the Enemy.
These are the folks the left just wants us to learn to get along with. Sick.
Looking forward to Murtha and the Hollywood crowd denouncing this savagery. NOT.
This incident has hardened my reactions.
I wish I could find Islamics in the USA who were objecting to this Islamic form of protection for them. If they maim and torture rather than incarcerate why should we care who gets killed over there or what is done to any of those being so "protected"?
Haditha(sp) died as an issue.....this brutal killing sealed the fate of that story.
It would be like ripping our soldiers for shooting members of the SS after coming out of a concentration camp.
I hope this is a serioius and committed effort. . .(and hope O'Reilly does not give them any more 'fair/balanced airtime' as well)
[. . .anyway, an effort we all can. . .must participate in. . )
Works. . .
About time for some new tactics.
Dusk to dawn curfews. Shoot on sight orders. Periodic mass roundups.
Get the scum who did this and make an example of them: public hanging followed by bayonet practice. Don't forget to have the rabbi on hand to p*ss on the corpses and the bacon grease ready to turn the guilty into human street lamps.
Kid gloves have to come off in Iraq, and they have to come off here, too; people like Kerry and Murtha should be visited by one Marine or Soldier a day who will threaten to beat the living crap out of either if he doesn't shut up.
Honest dissent is one thing --- outright sympathy with the enemy is another.
When the Lefty Anti-War morons say we "torture", they mean we engage in pychological humiliation, sleep deprivation and loud noises.
However, when this Islamist a$$holes torture, they mutilate and brutally kill.
And yet the Lefty Anti-War morons say that our supposed "torture" is the equivalent of theirs.
I'm waiting for the MSM to start publicizing the vocal and extreme protests by the liberals about these human rights violations of OUR TROOPS who were murdered by the terrorists.
Still waiting.
Still waiting.
He's a wonderful gent. Calm, direct, sensible and a vanishing breed.
ACE Democrats...hadn't heard that before..I like it.
Someone needs to ask Murtha if these cowardly killers are what he wants to cut and run from...
I think I grieved yesterday - today I am mad as hell about this.
Fox news this AM detailed to some extent the scope of the mutilation these fine soldiers suffered. Simple beheading would have been a mercy, comparatively speaking.
There is a sickness in my soul, and unmitigated anger at not only the doers, but the likes of Murtha.
ED absolutely went ballistic this morning condemning those who "got their panties in a bunch" about Gitmo/Haditha etc. asking where the editorials are--where Murtha is--and on and on. She is very angry.
It has bothered me from the beginning of this WOT that we have been fighting with one hand tied behind our backs. Trying to win the hearts and minds, etc. These are people that thought nothing of taking plane loads of innocent people on a death ride to kill their own countryman right before our very eyes. They behead people, they hide behind women and children, they don't have a soul. Do they abide by the Geneva Convention? NO, but we are ridiculed for letting dogs bark at them. Give me a break, we will never win this if we don't get down to business and forget about what the libs and msm have to say about it. I believe most of us would like nothing more than to see these savages on their knees begging for mercy. Then and only then do we start worrying about winning over their hearts and minds.
