New Border Chief: Walls Are Not The Answer

TUCSON, Ariz. - Two weeks on the job, the new head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday he does not favor building a huge wall along the Mexican border.

"I don't support, I don't believe the administration supports a wall," Commissioner W. Ralph Basham said in Tucson, where he met with patrol officials and agents before embarking on a tour across the Arizona desert.

Asked about proposals in Senate- and House-approved immigration measures to build security walls 380 or 700 miles long, respectively, Basham said, "It doesn't make sense, it's not practical."

As Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano put it, "You build a 50-foot wall, somebody will find a 51-foot ladder," he said.

Fencing, including so-called smart fencing with imbedded sensors, vehicle barriers and lighting will be part of the infrastructure improvements needed, Basham said. But a layered approach that mixes technology and air operations for observation and responding to illegal crossings will be necessary to control the border, he said.

"There is not a silver bullet out there, there's not one answer," he said.

Well, is it any surprise that Bush's new stooge is a no-border proponent??? Another attempt to lend credibility to the most egregious attempt to undermine the soverignty of the USA in many decades. The administration touts ANYTHING but a hard solution to the flow of illegals, always allowing the "weasel factor" in anything they propose. What a joke and a total afront to the REAL American citizen. The stench of Washington elitism and politics continues to fill the air...

Lie. Machine guns and the will to use them are affordable and very effective. They work so well that armies routinely equip their soldiers with them.

And where is the will ?? Certainly not in the Washington government --- ANYWHERE. Sad time for America.

Obviously this man is unsuitable for the job. Walls are a bare minimum, we also need minefields and machine gun nests as appropriate.

A wall, like the one in parts of California is "impractical" but "Fencing, including so-called smart fencing with imbedded sensors, vehicle barriers and lighting" is implicitly impractical. Absurd.

One good p.r. move was calling it "smart fencing." Before they were calling it a virtual fence. Whatever it is is a semblance of something Bush can point to and its ineffectivity he will not take the fall for. Planned failure with plausible deniability.

Exactly. How stupid does Washington think we are? Having asked that question -- I don't think they even care. Gross arrogance and elitism has them blinded to the people they work for.

Of course, they don't.

"Stimulate and accelerate cross-border technology trade by preventing unnecessary barriers from being erected (e.g., agree on mutual recognition of technical requirements for telecommunications equipment, tests and certification; adopt a framework of common principles for e-commerce)."

The above quote is from the White House website. It seems to be a clear statement of the current Administration's intent on border issues.

Walls? Not by themselves. Minefields should definitely be part of the system.

Yes, just another non-event to keep Vincente happy at the TOTAL expense of the American citizen. The shaft job from Washington just gets more painful.

=====
Since when does loading our country with criminal invaders, loading our welfare roles and medical system with parasites, destroying our soverignty and Constitutional protections for real Americans, even come close to "TECHNOLOGY TRADE" ???

Sick, twisted political arrogant absurdity.

"As Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano put it, "You build a 50-foot wall, somebody will find a 51-foot ladder," he said."

That's like saying if you lock your doors at night, some burglar will will break it open with a jimmy, so you should simply leave your doors wide open, so as many thieves as possible will invade your home , steal your property, and murder your family.
It's as brain dead as they come.
Who elects such idiots to become governors in this country anyway?

This guy was a retired Secret Service agent who in March 2003 was brought back in to head the agency and clean it up. (It was another one of Bush's smart moves to keep a feckless Clinton apointee in the post until that date.) Whether he did the job is questionable. My own suggestion would be to just shut up and begin an investigation into the corruption in the Border Patrol.

Regardless, the ONLY solution to absolutely stopping the bulk of illegal flow (both ways) is a wall or fence. The rest of the BS subterfuge we get, all the hi-tech red herrings, is fruitless. This country and its demographics are in the process of being destroyed by corrupt elitist politicians.

The entire situation has to be stopped and turned around.

Why not use the arrested illegals to build the wall? 11,000,000 illegals working hard moving dirt, laying brick, stringing concertina wire, etc. could build the wall in a week. After all, they're good at construction. After they finish, march them to the other side of the wall.

Use the north side of the border as an artillery impact area.

The vote-seeking Liberals (from both parties) would see that as "abusing criminal rights". As if these criminals have ANY RIGHTS...
